  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Numbers 8:16-18 (NIV)

I do not understand this passage, what does it mean? It sounds like God is showing partiality to those that he has chosen over the firstborn or vise versa.

16 They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn, the first male offspring from every Israelite woman. 17 Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal, is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself. 18 And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel.

Here's an except from a commentary by Pastor David Guzik on Numbers 8 that may answer your question...

"3. (Numbers 8:16-19) The Levites are regarded as Israel’s firstborn given to God.

“For they are wholly given to Me from among the children of Israel; I have taken them for Myself instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all the children of Israel. For all the firstborn among the children of Israel are Mine, both man and beast; on the day that I struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them to Myself. I have taken the Levites instead of all the firstborn of the children of Israel. And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the work for the children of Israel in the tabernacle of meeting, and to make atonement for the children of Israel, that there be no plague among the children of Israel when the children of Israel come near the sanctuary.”

a. I have taken them for Myself instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all the children of Israel: This theme was previously stated in Numbers 3:40-51.

4. (Numbers 8:20-22) Doing what God had commanded for the cleansing, dedication, and work of the Levites.

Thus Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel did to the Levites; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so the children of Israel did to them. And the Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes; then Aaron presented them, like a wave offering before the LORD, and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them. After that the Levites went in to do their work in the tabernacle of meeting before Aaron and his sons; as the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them."

In verse one, I don't blame God.....the people were a pain.....

1. And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord: and the Lord heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the Lord burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.

I don't blame Moses either, what he said in vs 11-14...these people were a complaining, miserable lot...even complaining about the manna that God provided for them....Moses had a thankless job, mon

11 And Moses said unto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?

12 Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?

13 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.

14 I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

I think this sounds like racism to me. And you notice God doesn't approve of it... he gives Miriam a skin disease in return for her prejudice against someone's skin? idk if that makes sense.

What stands out to me is that God picked the most humble man on all the earth. I think... I think I need to work on a little more humility.

Yes, it was emphasized about his humbleness. wasn't it? And that he was the most humble in all the earth....maybe that's why God emphasized that He will speak to him mouth to mouth....

And maybe God put the plague of leprosy on Miriam because of her prejudice....hadn't thought of that, but maybe that is why she got leprosy and Aaron didn't....

Sorry about the day(s?) I skipped :(

The 20th's chapter is Numbers 13. Here's a link:
Numbers 13 NIV - Exploring Canaan - The LORD said to - Bible Gateway

God bless you,
Grace

wondering if the evil report spoken of is called that because they lied or because they didn't believe that God would go before them to possess the land.....

32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
