A million fierce fighting men of Ethiopian attack Judah

(This is a dramatisation of a true story that occurred in 2 Chronicles Chapter 14)

The Ethiopian horde had poured out of Africa and swarmed up to attack King Asa of Judah from the south.

The Ethiopians were fierce fighting men. A million of them surged forward like a human tidal wave to smash the defences of Judah.

The army of Judah was 300,000 men and the army of Benjamin was 280,000 men. The army of King Asa was no match for the approaching host, that was almost twice their number.

Was this to be the end of the Kingdom of Judah crushed under a million marching feet of the Ethiopian horde ?

Would the army of Judah stand, or would they break ranks in panic and run ?

King Asa cried unto the Lord of Israel for help. Asa asked that the God of Israel would remember his chosen people and help them in their hour of darkest need.

“Lord Is it nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.”

God heard the prayer of Asa. God smote the Ethiopians. And the Ethiopians fled.

The army of Judah smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance and returned to Jerusalem.

Asa did that which was good in the eyes of the Lord. Asa took away the altars of the strange gods. Asa did take away the high places, and break down the images and cut down the groves of the strange gods. Yes Asa did that which was good in the eyes of the Lord.
(2 Chronicles 14v2)

Brinny,

Yes you are right this chapter shows that Asa had great faith in the power of God.

Victorious Asa gets a grim warning from God.

(This is a dramatisation of a true story from 2 Chronicles Chapter 15)

It was hot, hazy and humid in Jerusalem as the noon day sun was beating down. King Asa was relaxing and enjoying a cool drink and remembering his recent amazing victory over the mighty horde of Ethiopians.

This happy moment of tranquillity was broken by a footman with news of a visitor. He was surprised to hear that a messenger from the Prophet Oded had arrived and wanted to speak to him.

The messenger brought a grim warning from God, of what might happen should the people forsake the one true God of Israel.

Asa took courage from this warning. Asa decided to put away the abominable idols from within all the newly conquered cities.

Asa took the title of queen away from his own mother, because she had an idol. He smashed the idol with his foot and burnt the idol. He then decreed that in future all idol worshipers were to be put to death.

Then he gathered the people together and told them of God’s warning.

The people of Judah offered sacrifices of the spoil they had taken from the Ethiopians.

And then the people entered into a covenant to seek the Lord God of their fathers with all their heart, and with all their soul.

When the people took this oath they did it with a loud voice, shouting, trumpets, and cornets.

This oath of loyalty by the people of Judah greatly pleased God. And because of this oath, God gave the people rest and peace for the next thirth-five years.

Brinny,

Yes King Asa showed wisdon when he took notice of the warning from God.

It is a long time and we can go back to the time when the Israelites were leaving Egypt and complaining and it took them 42 years because they distrusted the Lord.

2 Chronicles 15 (I will do the brief outline and then agamemnon can do the extended edition)
Asa reforms. He removes all of the idols from the land of Judah and Benjamin because the Lord requested it. He repaired the altar of the Lord and then assembled all the people from Judah and Benjamin as well as Ephraim, Manasseh and Simeon because they saw the Lord their God was with him.
They assembled in Jerusalem in the 3rd month of the 15th year of Asa's reign. At that time they sacrificed 700 head of cattle and 7000 sheep and goats they had bought back from the plunder and entered a covenant to serve the Lord.

Miss Rowy,

Thank you for your excellent summany of the main points of Chapter 15.

King Baasha of Israel starts a war with Judah.

(This is a dramatisation of a true story that happened in 2 Chronicles Chapter 16)

A ripple of fear swept through the land of Judah. There was a word on people’s lips. It was a word that people hardly dared to whisper. That word was WAR.

After thirty five years of rest and peace in Judah, the armies of their northern enemy Israel were once again on the march.

Belligerent King Baasha of Israel was once again flexing his muscles and pressing for war with Judah. Baasha started building a fort on the border between the two countries. This fort was to be a base from which to launch the invasion, and it would stop anyone travelling between the two kingdoms.

King Asa of Judah was gripped with fear and panic. Judah was not in any fit state to fight a war. The last fighting they did was against the Ethiopians, and that was 35 year ago. Asa had stood the army down all those years ago and a new army would have to be trained. His army captains came back with bad news. The bad news was that the training would take too long. Judah faced total destruction.

The colour drained from Asa’s face. He looked like a ghost. What was he to do? Somehow he had to buy time. Judah needed time to get strong again. Buy time, yes that was the answer.

Asa took the treasures out of the temple and sent them to the King of Syria Ben-Hadad. Asa asked Ben-Hadad for help, with his fight with Israel. Ben-Hadad obliged and conquered many cities along the northern edge of Israel, all along the Syrian border.

King Baasha of Israel halted building his fort and retreated to defend his northern border with Syria. As soon as Baasha was gone, King Asa dismantled the fort and carried all the wood and stones away and used them as building materials. The war between Israel and Judah was over.

But God was angry with Asa. God was angry that Asa had turned to the Syrians for help. God would have liked Asa to have asked God for help. God sent a seer speak to Asa. The seer told Asa that God was very angry with him. Asa did not like this message, and blamed the messenger. Asa put the seer in prison.

Because Asa put God’s messenger in prison Asa got bad feet. Asa got these bad feet in the 39 year of his reign. But still he did not ask God for help. Asa’s feet got worse and worse until he died.

After the death of King Asa, his son Jehoshaphat became King of Judah in his place.

Asa had done lost his mind....he brought judgement against his OWN self when he put the prophet in prison, and THEN oppressed the people??!!! And then he STILL didn't seek the Lord about his disease!!!! :swoon:

Brinny,

How right your are about King Asa in his old age.

So many of these kings start brightly as King Asa of Judah did, only to slip up in their old age.

Brinny,

After such a bright start, Asa ends his reign by putting Gods messenger in prison. Yes it is very sad that he was not such a good king towards the end of his life.

Jehosaphat chooses the way of the Lord

(This is a dramatisation of the true story that occurred in 2 Chronicles Chapter 17)

Asa King of Judah died from his bad feet because he put the Lord’s messenger in prison, for telling Asa that God was angry with him.

Asa’s son Jehoshaphat made up his mind to choose the way of the Lord, and to be a better King of Judah than his father. He did not want to make the same mistakes as his father Asa, and Jehoshaphat started his reign in the most splendid way that it is possible to imagine.

Jehoshaphat strengthened his armies. Jehoshaphat built up the armies of Judah and Benjamin to over a million men, and Jehoshaphat put garrisons in the cities that Asa his father had taken from Israel.

Jehoshaphat was 100% determined to do all the right things that pleased God, so he took out the high places to Baal and groves to Baal from out of the land of Judah.

Jehoshaphat sent out the Levites to teach the word of the Lord throughout Judah.
The fear of the Lord fell upon Judah and all the lands round about.

Therefore no-one dare make war against Judah. Even the Arabians and their old arch enemies the Philistines brought presents and tribute to Jehoshaphat.

The wealth and influence of Jehoshaphat grew and grew and grew, and he built great cities and castles.
Jehoshaphat walked in the ways of his forefather the great King David.
The Lord was with Jehoshaphat.

Rehoboam flees with the rebels chasing him

(This is a dramatisation of a true story that occured in 2 Chronicles Chapter 10)

The chariot wheels were spinning wildly in the dirt and dust as Rehoboam and a few of the young men make their escape. The horses pounding along frantically as their hoves thundered in the panic to get away. Leaving behind all his valuable belongings Rehoboam lashes out with his wip upon the backs of the snorting horse as they struggle to go faster and faster. The horses breath makes a terrible noise of snorting and panting loudly as they fight for air to get their legs pounding along faster.

Not far behind are thousands of angry Israelites hard on their heels. The Israelites have stoned Rehoboams tribute collector and have got a taste for blood. The Israelites now want the life of Rehoboam.

Rohoboam flees for his life, with the screaming angry Israelites chasing after on horses and chariots. Their faces screwed up and snarling with anger. Their mouths screaming out curses and oathes about getting their hands on Rehoboam, and what they will do to him when they catch him.

Miss Rowy

I really enjoyed this story from Chapter 10. There was a rebellion by the northern part of Israel and King Rehoboam has to make a mad crazy dash to save his life, and escape back to Jerusalem.

It's precious what Jehoshaphat did, and how gloriously God blessed him for it. This is delightful.....what a heart he had for God, and it was a heart so akin to how David's own heart was towards God.

This is AWESOME! He sent out PREACHERS!!!!!:

7 Also in the third year of his reign he sent to his princes, even to Benhail, and to Obadiah, and to Zechariah, and to Nethaneel, and to Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah. 8 And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests. 9 And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the Lord with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people.

And THIS is PIVOTAL, for THIS is how God poured out His blessings for the sake of Jehoshaphat. It reminds me of the verse about God searching to and fro over all the earth to show Himself strong ("For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. " ~2 Chronicles 16:9):

"And the fear of the Lord fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat." ~2 Chronicles 17:10

Precious.
