  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Don't forget also that Protestants tend to follow the listing of the 10 Commandments found in Exodus 20, while Catholics tend to use the listing found in Deuteronomy 5; in the latter, the "coveting" aspect is divided into two groups in verse 21, thereby rendering eleven Commandments if "having no other gods" and "making no graven images" are not combined into one.

Some months ago when this issue was discussed, a poster divided the list into 13 or 14 commandments. It all depends on your view of what constitutes the thought of each commandment.

No they are not number in the bible but it doesn't take a scientist to fingure out which number goes where!

A scientist? I think this belongs to the theologians; and even they have different opinions. Does the numbering matter?

Deuteronomy 5:7 Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
9 Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,
10 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

11 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
12 Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.
13 Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:
14 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth], nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
17 Thou shalt not kill. 18  Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
19  Neither shalt thou steal.
20  Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
21  Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth], or any thing that is thy neighbour's.
Notice that verse 21 is ALL one sentence..nothing sepreates it. Verses 8-10 is ALL one sentence. The only thing that would make the 10 commandments more than 10 should be the verses about the sabbath. But anyone can figure that all of those are relating to the sabbath!

Yes, GEL, it does....in modern English. Don't forget that in the original ancient writings, there were no chapters, verses, paragraphs, punctuation marks, or capital letters. Written languages were pretty primitive back in those days, and all those goodies which we now have were added later to make the writings more understandable to us.

The "one sentence" you're talking about there is two sentences in my New American Bible, as it also is the New International Version.

It just all depends on whether you decide to use periods, commas, or semicolons in your translation, none of which are there in the original copies.

Again: it doesn't make any difference how you break this stuff down; you can get 10 Commandments, 12, 15, or 20---but the content is exactly the same.

No GEL. Technically it read

I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above * or on the earth beneath * or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. Observe the sabbath day to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your ox or your donkey or any of your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you, so that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore * the LORD your God commanded you to observe the sabbath day. Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the LORD your God gives you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, and you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field or his male servant or his female servant, his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Only it was written in Hebrew. So that would make it one long commandment.

I can bring the fruit salad....or potato salad....or a green salad. Oooh, Jello pretzel salad, it's great stuff!

Now, Kotton....

This salad is truly unusual. The pretzels remain crunchy, and you'd SWEAR there are chopped cashews or pecans in it! The version I had was strawberry jello with FRESH strawberries, and there was a layer of whipped cream on top.

You go tend the horse steaks....and I'd like mine rare, please!

Peace be with you,
~VOW

Absolutely! As my nephew says, if it don't moo, he don't eat it! Where's the sliced tomatoes and avocados? All this food is making me hungry.

VOW, we mix cream cheese in with whipped cream. You can also make it with raspberries instead strawberries. :D

Are Jews observing the wrong day as the sabbath, according to the commandment?
Pope promotes SUNDAY as the sabbath day of the 4th (3rd Catholic) Commandment. http://www.cwnews.com/news/viewrec.cfm?RefNum=8029

A LETTER FROM THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH TO PROTESTANTS
http://www.bible-sabbath.com/rome.htm
"Why Don’t You Keep Holy the Sabbath Day?" pages 3-15, in The Clifton Tracts, Vol. 4, published by the Roman Catholic Church. Originally released in North America in 1869 through the T. W. Strong Publishing Company of New York City, so that those outside the papal fold might return to the not partial, but full, authority of the Mother Church of the Vatican.

What think ye?

I think you are driving the thread off track. Start a new thread about the Sunday observance of the Sabbath.

This thread is about the numbering and/or omission of the Ten Commandments in Catholic teaching. What do you think about that?
