I always liked them. But I got very upset at Karen and her struggle with anorexia. I guess as a kid I really did not understand she did not just commit slow motion suicide by starving herself to death.

BTW - Karen was one of the best drummers of the 1970s.

One of the finest pop groups ever. I'm a rock guy, through and through, but I've always had a soft spot for these guys. Karen's death was such a needless tragedy. "A Song For You" is one of my top ten albums ever, and for me, the high point of their career. Well worth digging into if you enjoy well crafted soft rock or 70s pop. Their harmonies are untouchable, and while not every song they recorded was a gem, the hits well outnumber the misses. Lots of good "Best Of" albums are out there, but start with "A Song For You" if you really want to know what they were all about.

'A song for you' album is wonderful.
I especially like the harmony intermission. Its pretty funny.

I didnt realise they did a tv show, now with you tube I can watch them!!
I first found the carpenters in the early 90s after watching the movie Karen Carpenter story. it was so sad. They always play Carpenters on oldies and easy listening stations.

Timeless music. Yes and really good drumming Karen! Richard was genius at piano...but its Karens voice that stands out from the rest. Haunting, melancholy, joyful, intimate, perfect pitch, words cant describe unless you talking bout voices of an angel here.

lol.
Well, they actually did some adverts, for potato chips I think it was.
Also one song they took off a bank commercial.

It's this one 'We've only just begun'.
Top of the World was also covered by other artists, and one time a radio jingle covered it and changed the tune to sleepyhead beds.

now here's a thread i can get behind! and in secular music, too, who knew?!:D

i dearly love the music of the Carpenters. i was so shocked when Karen died. i just loved her. that's the first time i'd ever heard of anorexia nervosa. what a sad, sad thing. she was trying to get better, too! but her poor heart just couldn't take it :(. what a tragic loss for their family and the world.

A Song For You surely is my favorite, but Superstar is a close second. it's hauntingly beautiful.

i remember hearing somewhere that when they first started the Carpenters, Karen was going to sing backup and Richard lead... but as we all know, it didn't turn out that way. both songs below were from their first album, which incidentally, was the first album i ever bought. second was Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. funny the things you remember.

Nixon liked the Carpenters, because he thought they were the way young people should be, rather than those with a bum and drop out protester image.

hi farouk:wave:

sounds like Mr. Nixon was at least right about some things :)
