I was just playing devil's advocate (on a christian forum nontheless). Hendrix was amazing and took the instrument to a whole new level, but personally, I think some of his songs get redundant. I don't normally bother arguing with people when they claim that he was the best, but I wanted to scuffle.nadroj1985 said:I've gotta disagree with you here. I can't claim that it is the general consensus that Hendrix is the greatest, no, but from what I have seen, he is certainly mentioned most as the greatest. And from what I've heard, nobody comes close. He used blues, certainly (as did every other classic rock band practically) but he used it as a basis for his improvisation; the guy ventured into free-jazz and avant-garde territory at times. I'll grant you that I haven't heard much Randy Rhoades, but I find it hard to believe he brought the complete revolution in guitar that Hendrix did. I will check it out though. Jimmy Page is a great rhythm guitarist and soloist as well, but still is not in the same building as Hendrix IMHO.
I can't articulate it very well, but the Beatles were definitely a great band. John, Paul & George are great musicians and poets. I probably wouldn't put them in MY top 10 favorite artists, but there's no denying their legend.blackwasp said:Back to the Beatles...
Amen, I agree that they aren't one of my favorite bands either...but they are clearly the best ever. The amazing part is that they did all of that in such a short amount of time.brettnolan said:I can't articulate it very well, but the Beatles were definitely a great band. Here's part of the write-up from allmusic.com:
"...To start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Moreover, they were among the few artists of any discipline that were simultaneously the best at what they did, and the most popular at what they did. Relentlessly imaginative and experimental, the Beatles grabbed a hold of the international mass consciousness in 1964 and never let go for the next six years, always staying ahead of the pack in terms of creativity, but never losing their ability to communicate their increasingly sophisticated ideas to a mass audience. Their supremacy as rock icons remains unchallenged to this day, decades after their breakup in 1970.
Even when couching praise in specific terms, it's hard to convey the scope of the Beatles' achievements in a mere paragraph or two. They synthesized all that was good about early rock & roll, and changed it into something original and even more exciting. They established the prototype for the self-contained rock group that wrote and performed their own material. As composers, their craft and melodic inventiveness were second to none, and key to the evolution of rock from its blues/R&B-based forms into a style that was far more eclectic, but equally visceral. As singers, both John Lennon and Paul McCartney were among the best and most expressive vocalists in rock; the group's harmonies were intricate and exhilarating. As performers, they were (at least until touring had ground them down) exciting and photogenic; when they retreated into the studio, they were instrumental in pioneering advanced techniques and multi-layered arrangements. They were also the first British rock group to achieve worldwide prominence, launching a British Invasion that made rock truly an international phenomenon."

I remember this program that said the Beatles were devil worshipers, and they emphisised one song where the verse was, "But if you talk about destruction, you know that can count me out, in" and their album covers where they had all those sorcerers and crud. So now that song is drilled into my head even though the only Beatles songs I knew were "Hey Jude" and "Help".
