I've gotta disagree with you here. I can't claim that it is the general consensus that Hendrix is the greatest, no, but from what I have seen, he is certainly mentioned most as the greatest. And from what I've heard, nobody comes close. He used blues, certainly (as did every other classic rock band practically) but he used it as a basis for his improvisation; the guy ventured into free-jazz and avant-garde territory at times. I'll grant you that I haven't heard much Randy Rhoades, but I find it hard to believe he brought the complete revolution in guitar that Hendrix did. I will check it out though. Jimmy Page is a great rhythm guitarist and soloist as well, but still is not in the same building as Hendrix IMHO.

I was just playing devil's advocate (on a christian forum nontheless). Hendrix was amazing and took the instrument to a whole new level, but personally, I think some of his songs get redundant. I don't normally bother arguing with people when they claim that he was the best, but I wanted to scuffle. On an alternate note, you should check out Rhoads, he had a very European classical approach...same time period as Eddie Van Halen. Most purists agree though that Rhoads was superior.

I can't articulate it very well, but the Beatles were definitely a great band. John, Paul & George are great musicians and poets. I probably wouldn't put them in MY top 10 favorite artists, but there's no denying their legend.

Amen, I agree that they aren't one of my favorite bands either...but they are clearly the best ever. The amazing part is that they did all of that in such a short amount of time.

Actuall, it is funny how often that happens. Hendrix, certainly one of the best guitarists ever was only around for four years after he became famous, and the Sex Pistols burnt out in about two.

But if you look at it, Hendrix didn't put out very many studio albums (3?), and didn't write nearly as many hit songs, especially when you consider that "All Along the Watchtower" is a cover and that he didn't write "Hey Joe".
