I'm almost finished with The Secret Life of Bees. Mostly I listen to novels but occasionally nonfiction. My next one will be Reading Lolita in Tehran.

Favorite author? That's a tough one. My husband is the one who spends money on audiobooks, and he likes mysteries and spy thrillers. (Ever miss the rolleyes smiley?) I usually just get them at the library, so it's whatever I can get. I prefer to listen to classics that I'm embarassed not to have read before, or occasionally ones I read a long time ago. I need to see if I can get my hands on any by Kazatsakis. I think I've read all his novels except Zorba, and I'd like to listen to a few of them again. Lately I've been going through some stuff that makes me want to re-read (listen, this time) to Last Temptation.

I guess you can tell by my screen name that I like Dostoevsky.

I also find like a lot of contemporary first novels, but usually not the second book by the same author, so maybe I could list "first novels" as a favorite author.

Oh, and I also really like Orson Scott Card! Have you ever read any of his books? He is a Mormon CS Lewis. If you are enjoying Out of the Silent Planet, you would enjoy the Ender series, I'm sure.

Hey everyone, I'm sooo excited that AWANA will be kicking off the first Wednesday in October. I was a bit nervous as the leader decided last minute she didn't want to do it and no one knew who would. So we're running about a month behind schedule, but better late than never.

Our program has about 40 kids I'd guess in it. My daughter is ready to go. Last year she was just barely three and very clingy. This year she's older and has a major interest in her Cubbies' book and what God says and even asked me a couple of days ago if it was time to go to Cubbies.

When my baby is older I'd like to be a leader, but for now I'll just sit there and wait for my daughter to get done and have some fellowship with the women of the church.

Also, CrazyLiz, sounds like your lil girl is growing up. Good luck on not going nuts!!

My favorite mystery authors are Robert B Parker and Raymond Chandler. Except for the off color remarks about black people the Chandlers are my favorite. My wife likes Janet Evanovich, and Mary Higgins Clark, but I haven't listened to them yet.

I really enjoyed the Ender Series, and the sequels, that dealt with bean. There is a new one out I think. If you liked those, try the book called "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. That is a great book as well!

The dollar stores are good at stocking Christian books on tape. You might look there to start your own collection.

So far, we've only heard secular novels like "The Old Man and the Sea" and spy thrillers like "The Altman Crisis" but I'll be on the lookout for Christian books available in our library system as well as literary classics that I haven't got around to reading.

I tell you what our local library is great I even order my books online from them and pick them up. There are readers, who are classic as far as they belong to the book. George Guidall who reads the cat who books (great books by the way) is the only person I can think of when I read these on my own.

The Jan Karon, Father Timothy books are very well done too, but i am really not fond of the Cynthia character

They have the same kinds of plots, often the same themes, they just come from Christian publishers, so they are considered Christian. One book I read was Blue Night, and they only mention of God or Christian themes in it was a mention early on that one of the characters was a Christian. In other Christian books, the themes of murder, betrayal, adultery, war, working hard to get ahead, and so on are exactly the same as in secular books.

Has anyone read a book, a good book, that had Christian themes without the murder and mayhem?

Yeah read the Jan Karon books. They are not only good stories but they are full of faith related issues and themes. I found the left behind series to be somewhat entertaining, but they got old real fast. Other than those, there is a great book by Vanauken called Asevere Mercy, that is a biography of him and his wife, and their conversion thanks in part to corespondence with CS Lewis. Excellent book I couldn't put it down.

When I was cleaning out the library I came across Christian style Harequin romance novels. Whoops they fell into the dumpster Being the librarian with carte blanche does have its advantages

Tony Hillerman is our favorite for family road trips. His mysteries are clean and teach a lot about intercultural matters in a non-preachy way. If you object to hearing about Native American shamanism, though, the Jim Chee mysteries are not for you. They are not too heavy, but do explain several Navajo rituals, including both their religious and sociological functions. We don't find them objectionable. They are respectful of different cultures, and you can use them as a jumping-off point to talk with your children about respecting other cultures and religions while still holding firmly to your own faith. With teenagers interested in missions and evangelism, these books could be used as food for thought and discussion.

I've looked. Believe me.

So far the only book I've found on audio that was on a reading list for any of my seminary courses was Dante's The Divine Comedy. Oh, also for my Bonhoeffer class, there was an audioplay produced by Focus on the Family. I haven't taken C.S. Lewis. I know if I did I could listen to about half the reading list.
