God, Who cannot lie, wrote the Bible in the first place.
Wait, an omnipotent being who cannot lie? Shall I say ROFLMAO?

I have a hard time deciding whether this thread is hilarious or tragic. But let me see if the rest of it helps.

EDIT: it's decidedly tragic.

But think of it from AV's perspective. The Euthyphro Dilemma trips up everyone. It's a hard one.

I think most True Believers would not dare to put limitations on God, but they would also not dare to allow God to hear them say He is capable of anything nasty or "bad" as we understand it.

It's kind of like a game of "Thought Police". The True Believer knows that God is watching every thought they have, and they further know that "bad thoughts" are a crime.

This type of "X-Treme Mental Gymnastics" also helps with such tricky problems as "The Homoisiousness of God in Battling the Arian Heresy" (shortened to the Nicene Creed so they can say it over and over until the words no longer make sense but they get the right "thought" in their head)!

It's very important to hold mutually contradictory and exclusive concepts in your head simultaneously to please God.

But it's not ok to ask why.

11 pages of talking about AV, the poor guy must be orgasmic now, what a way to live a life, with a God in your head,
how could anyone want to inflict that on a loved one? but as they say in Yorkshire, there is nowt as queer as folk.
(translated, there is nothing more strange than people)

Very good --- as I'm fond of saying --- God gifts us scientists.

So that that YEC and some True Believers can:

1. Denigrate what they do by telling them "science can take a hike"?

2. Exalt their ignorance over the time and effort the scientists put into science to make science work?

Gosh, if I were God I think I'd "gift" my followers less. I mean, any parent will tell you it gets annoying to give things to kids who then procede to slag, abuse and generally treat with disdain the gifts you freely gave.

You've already got your gift: this cool big planet full of data. If one wants to think of it as a sin-degraded dunghole one must endure until God gives something better, then maybe God will leave us here until we all appreciate the place and the nice rocks and data here just a bit more.

That's why you're not God.

I'd venture to say that instead, He would send some of His ambassadors to point out to His "gifts" that they are abusing it.

AV, if God gifts us scientists then he presumably does so so that they can do science, right?

What do they abuse when they do just that?

How do you know? :)

Because only an atheist would make a career studying rocks and then coming to the conclusion that Jesus isn't The Rock.

Isn´t that clear?

When they agree with AV, they are gifts from God. When they disagree with AV, they are misusing science.

Don´t you know that AV holds science to a higher standard than scientists?
You know what?

*jumps on the bandwagon*

AV's standards can take a hike. :amen:

Well, for every one that deconverted, I'd say there's at least one who did convert.

Let's see a geologist do this today - (sans investigation):

Farmers around my area have tapped the local rocky aquifer to water their crops, including grains which are used to make bread. The runoff from the fields produces streams.

This Christianity stuff is so confusing!

Actually, AV, your happy little aphorisms and "word play" aside, I was a Christian long before I was a geologist.

I just wish when debating science with Fundamentalists it was possible to keep them focused long enough on detailed topics of scientific interest such that they could go for more than a couple posts without being honor and duty-bound to roll out a "Standard Issue Christian Bon Mot"

Remember, we're goin' ta see the Son, not revrund Moon! (Apologies to the Imperials)

I'm more innurested in the Rock o' Ages than the Age o' Rocks! (apologies to "Inherit the Wind")

But I can understand, too much thinking and disciplined analysis of logic and a fundamentalist might forget to remind God how much they love him. And God would cry.

<klaxon alarm sound>time-to-say-God-oriented clever comment</klaxon alarm sound>

Um --- by consulting local water tables first, I take it? Or do they use trial-and-error?
