I'm aware that some churches use non-alchoholic wine in the sacrements. I don't know how widespread this practice is. And, of course, some Christian movements repudiate alchohol completely -- the Salvation Army for example.

The Salvation Army doesn't believe in drinking alcohol, not because of the temperence movement, but because of the fact that they were and are dealing with people who have serious alcohol and other addictions.
therefore it is wise that they don't do this themselves.
but it is not something that they say is in the bible or it is a terrible sin.

I'm a beer Man myself!
drinking beer and jamming with friends is a favorite past time for me.

Even if changing the elements is not a sin, the churches that do this do not beleive in the Real Presence, so they are guilty of not discerning the body of Christ mentioned in 1 corinthinains 12.
You can't have your cake and eat it. If Christ isn't present in the grape juice then they are correct to not discern his body there, and their communion is indeed a symbolic rememberence meal.

not just getting drunk but any at all.
when confronted with verses in the Bible that Jesus made wine at the wedding and drank wine himself, they try and say that it was nonalchoholic wine.

has anyone got any thoughts on this!

Those churches that teach that it is a sin to drink are led by pastors who have never tasted Shiner Bock  :yum:

Darn your right, although then they would still be wrong to call what they do communion and to ascribe the body and blood to symbols only.

And by preachers that haven't had a good Sandeman ruby porte (which is going through my system at the moment).

Ooh! Just burped and got a taste of the wine!

And the chili.

Hmmm... That was actually, strangely good together.

There are a lot of chruches that offer grape juice in the sacriment for the sake of any recovering alchoholics in the congregation. The small sip of wine would lead to a great ammount of temptation for those members. Could you imagine how bad it would be to have your worst vice attached to the sacriment?

At least in the Catholic church (and I'm sure it's the same in other churches that offer communion) it is not required/necessary to take the wine if one has already taken the bread. Alcoholics then don't have to try it and then are in no danger of falling back

erm... non-alcoholic wine in NT earth? methinx it would have been called grape juice - if they had such a thing! wine was wine.

How the fundamentalists get round this one I do not know. The original Greek in John 2 is Οινος which is WINE.

I did hear tell of one abstaining Christian who interpreted Paul's advice in 1 Timothy 5:23 to mean that the wine should be rubbed on to the stomach!

Afterthought. We keep talking about moderation. This obviously can apply to beer and wine, but what do you guys think about the hard stuff. Now, i'm not a fan of getting drunk so when i do the hard stuff, i only stick to one small drink. I have a little 8 ounce glass, and i'll enjoy a whiskey sour with my video games, or a scotch on the rocks when i can afford the good stuff, but even with just one, i get a little tipsy. And i'm a big guy with a good tolerance.

Also, what do people think of other mind altering substances? The bible for my knowlege is relatively silent on drugs outside of saying keep your body a temple. I'm not into drugs, but i tried smoking pot a few times years back, and i feel far more guilty to what i do to my body at mcdonalds then the times i tried drugs.

I've also had vicodin. (sp?) Once when my doctor gave it to me, and once when a friend's doctor gave it to him, and he shared it. One a sin, the other not? Or not a big deal either way?

Then there's the harder stuff. I packed up my bags and moved to Hollywood about 5 years ago. Got myself a "cool" job in the music buisness. I was a freelance record executive. I wrote marketing plans for heavy rock bands. My first success was actually with a good christian band. I managed to get POD on the radio and MTV. I got to work for Project 86 as well, but didn't do as much for them. But i also worked with artists that would be a little more frowned upon here. A perfect circle, maralyn manson, etc. Anyway, my point is that there was a lot of drugs in hollywood. I even tried cocaine a few times. I found it to be less intoxicating than alchohol, but still not my cup of tea. But if it doesn't get out of hand, and is less intoxicating than alchohol is that a sin? Is it because it is wrong, or just because it's not legal?

Vicodin is so awesome. Had it at the dentest when I got my wisdom teeth removed.

I think the issue of it being a sin is that "does it control you?" And "does it get between you and God?"

If not, it doesn't necessarily mean it's still not a bad idea.
