Tatting

Does anyone know how to tat? Or have any websites where I can get patterns, ideas, instructions, etc?

I want to embroider a hankie for a friend's wedding and want to tat an edging. I can crochet one, but want a new challenge.

what is tatting?

Tatting is a way of making lace. it's used as borders on hankies, table clothes, etc. It's also used for making bookmarks etc.

actually, tatting isn't that hard. But it looks complicated so it impresses the heck out of people


now, bobbin lace on the other hand is HARD!

Tatting is like mini macrome and bobin lace is like fabric weaving by hand. I think I'd rather be crocheting.

I can sew, knit, embroider, do almost any kind of needlework, tat, bobbin lace......but I have NEVER been able to get the hang of crochet. I think I have a crocheters block

I picked up tatting rather quickly - but I learned as a child so maybe that was the difference. When I was pregnant with my first child I tried to learn to crochet. I was determined to make a baby blanket. Well, she was 14 before I managed to master it enough to make her a lap blanket. (Very small lap!!) I have practiced it from time to time and have finished an afghan for my son and for my daughter. But tatting is my favorite.

It really is not hard to learn - you just have to decide you want to learn and do it. I think the hardest part was getting the "flip". Once you manage that it's easy!
