I have a passion for Jewish culture and teachings. This passion has lead me to the Talmud.

I actually own to parts of it. Those two books are two of my most loved possessions.

I would love to hear what someone with a Jewish background would have to say in regards to it. Also I know the Talmud is very large. Any reccommentations on pieces of it that stick out that I should invest in?

Thank for any input! God Bless!

Sounds like you have a good chunk to start with now... If you have any questions about any parts of it, feel free to ask... because history, culture, background information like what kind of Rabbi would say this or that would put a lots of the comments and commentary into perspective... helps to take things in with a grain of salt and mighty prayers for the navigation necessary through this maze you are about to enter in Jewish thought.

thank you guys for your input. I will look into the things you mentioned steve.

and lulav I actually have every mans talmud. the other section i have is entitled "the talmud, a selection" and its published by penguin classics.

Reading from the talmud has probably been the most complex and deepest writing I have ever read and I have read alot. nothing in the protestant christian faith compares at all.

I think of what I have read one of the most interesting parts to me is in everymans talmud were it talks about the origin of demons. I have never heard anything like that. It is so radically different than the christian doctrine.

If you have a Reform Jewish synagogue in your area the rabbi there MAY be willing to sit down with you, or he may be able to refer you to someone who could teach you. Or even better, if you can find a Chabad synagogue.
Or you could locate a Messianic synagogue in your area and see if that rabbi or leader could teach you or refer you to someone. There are places out there, you just have to hunt a little bit. ;)

Well, no offense to anyone, but I wouldn't rely upon a Reform rabbi or a Messianic leader. Generally it's best to learn someone who has a LOT of
experience studying Talmud, and that is Orthodox rabbis. However the
catch 22 with that is that they generally don't teach non-Jews.
You might check with Chabad though, one of our local Chabad rabbis
said he didn't have a problem with Gentiles studying Talmud except for
a couple of sections. He didn't specify what they were and I didn't
think to ask.

Yeah, I should have deleted the part about Reform when I thought of the Chabad, but I neglected to do that. Bad me! bad me!! ;)

Yeah, well, that's just like your opinion man.

And it is a good opinion. Why would messianics study the writings of those who not only rejected the Messiah, but built a new religion to keep the Jewish people from finding or following him?

I've heard of MJ congregations saying the Amidah in their services. I wonder if they speak the 19th, and have any idea what they're saying.

What's interesting is that there are maybe four or five pages from within the Talmud that I've ever seen Christians talk about. They like to talk about the passage about the name of the Messiah (especially the one about the "leper scholar," since they claims it supports interpreting Isaiah 53 as a messianic prophecy), the part about the time limitations on the messianic timetable, the section about "Yeshu HaNotsri" being hanged on a tree and the pursuit of his disciples. There are also some other passages that deal with this "Yeshu HaNotsri." This is all that I've seen Christians interested in, so I don't know why they would go on to want to read and study the rest of the Talmud, which deals completely with Jewish religious practice and has nothing to do with anything that Christians would generally be interested in.

Know what I mean?

Do you think, then, that the writing of Birkat haMinim constitutes a creation of a new type of Judaism that was created to keep believers in Yeshua out of the loop? This is really out of nowhere.
