Yea true. So you just flounder around trying to be healthy without really knowing how. Most people that advise would have a conflict of interest cos health providers wouldnt really have a job if people didnt end up sick and needing their services.

People are also complicit in that they are willfully ignorant of good health practices. So there is a tacit agreement between doctors and patients, facilitated by health insurance.

What is puzzling to me however is why those who don't have health insurance fail to take care of their health.

I think we need a comprehensive education program about health taught from the earliest grades, with parents and other adults receiving remedial lessons as well. We need a unified theory of health taught nationwide.

Hmm well in school we did have some token health lessons.
And there is health and safety in some organisations. I was a health and safety officer.
I did a paper on health psychology at uni, i remember how it said people with 'type a' personalities were more at risk of heart attacks. Type A is actually enouraged in the workforce ..these are people that drive themself to an early death cos they are workaholics. I dont know if it means 'type b' ppl are lazy....

I dont know the number of ppl that dont have health insurance that dont take care of their health, i do know that is every expensive as you get older so ppl stop it though. The elderly try their best. But by then often its too late as their bad habits have caught up with them and shows in their bodies.

Type A's tend to be quite reckless, so I'm guessing they are reckless with their health as well.

Back story: I had just started my first teaching job - so I was about 22 or so - and my very good friend who was 40 told me that when I turn 30 to start really taking care of my body. Eat well, exercise, stay trim, and get really good skin care products for my face. I thought she was crazy - it couldn't be THATbad.

Now I'm 31 and oh my... nearly every week something is breaking on my body. I'm typing this while my right wrist is wrapped up in an ace bandage with icy hot on my skin. No I don't have any clue how I injured it - my wrist was feeling better and I rehurt it yesterday night while washing a boatload of dishes. Should have stopped, but just had to finish up the dishes.

I must lose weight - was doing well too but I injured my back and that ended all of the attempts. I know I just have to get back into it, but that's the hard part. I'm afraid I'll just hurt my back again. I could get a trainer, but my first experience with one was really bad - couldn't get out of bed for almost a week without rolling out of bed. Not really in the mood to pay anybody to yell at me to keep throwing that weight ball harder. Nope.

Anybody noticing the same things? I hope I'm not alone. Woke up this morning with this on my mind and I'm thinking today is a good day to try again. I try to keep the mentality of just getting through this day - doing good actions for my body just for today - and it isn't so bad.

Also, I did get a fitbit back in August - love it but I need to get myself back into tracking everything and doing the fitness goals. I know I can do them - it's just getting myself off the couch and actually doing them ;)

Where are you with all of the health goals?
well thanks for posting this message to remind people to exercise.my fingers soar since i use my phone too much. i am trying to be on the tread mill 3 times a week , this week i just did 1time with all the excuses. i will put it on my reminder and to be strict on myself. I find try to be a blessing to someone else is good for the health, for ex. find someone in the forum to help.there need some balance in our body spirit and soul. and yeah eat right ,sleep good , drink water , doing something for fun are good .

I think it starts in your 20's or earlier; like taking care of yourself and getting into those habits. My mom was always one for taking care of herself and I guess I've just always followed that. I've always taken care of my skin and tried to eat right and exercise. In my 30's I just continued that; having kids changed everything though. There is less time for myself and I'm often so tired that when I get free time I just wanna sleep. Kids changed my body too along with age. I don't look like I've changed much; but I can tell! and sometimes I'm horrified. I still feel 18, but changes happen. But, interestingly enough, I reconnected with friends from high school and I look much younger than most in our class and they comment on it too. I'll take it! I need to find time to work out regularly though. When I was really working out; I just felt so good all the time.

I put on a lot of weight in my 20s by not taking into account how a lot of lifestyle choices would affect my health. For example, we settled for a cheaper place to live by choosing a location that was really remote. I've always made most food from scratch, but a lot of my ingredient choices were based on cheap filler foods like noodles, potatoes, and grains. All technically healthy choices, but the result was a high-carbohydrate diet and a lot of driving (sitting). I was almost 50 pounds overweight.

I never thought I'd enjoy living in an "urban" area, because I like my space. How little I knew! When we moved closer to a city, I suddenly had access to sidewalks and bike trails, people keep their dogs on leashes so I'm not being chased down, barked at and occasionally bitten by territorial loose dogs, and I'm less than 15 minutes drive from anywhere I regularly need to go. I also learned a lot about nutrition since then, and limit the carb load in our meals. I've been a lot more fit in my 30s than any time since high school. I wonder if some of those "aging" symptoms are more a lifestyle thing for people in their 30s than actual aging.

Is there actually a way to take care of skin? I guess I always assumed skin products were gimmicky.

The two most important things for your skin are drinking lots of water and protecting it from the sun (imo, and I used to sell a lot of skin products once upon a time...)

As far as lifestyle goes, I really do think having children changes everything. And probably being time-poor generally.

My skin is fine; the main problem Ive had is unexpected and prematurely bad rheumatism, but that started in my 20s. As a result I am dealing with a level of physical pain which prevents relaxation, continually, but other than that I am in good shape.

The main vexation is that this pain makes me irritable, and inclines me to overindulge in gourmet food and other distractions of a less interesting sort, while keeping me away from more intellectually stimulating pasttimes. Its messing up my work life balance, because I can focus on work, but not on recreation, except for very mundane things like binge-viewing Netflix.

I agree that the very best things to take care of your skin is drink water and use moisturizer with spf everyday. You don't need fancy products. As you age look for moisturizer with peptides. It's not a solve all but it will help your skin. I use one I found on Amazon for under $10.

Ah, I forgot about the sunscreen thing. I don't get a lot of sun exposure where I live, so I totally forgot sunburn/skin cancer was a thing.

I agree, time management is a biggie. Everything revolves around school schedules and childcare when you have kids. I think making time for exercise is easier if it's part of something else. Like in the summer, I can hook a little trailer to my bike and take the kids to the park or the beach or even to get treats. But in the winter, there's nothing outdoors to do and pretty much all travel is by car, so that's a huge amount of daily exercise that has to be cut. I mean, you can go to a gym or take kids to an indoor play center, but that's more of a hassle and so it just doesn't happen every day like a bike ride or trampoline or swingset or going for a walk/run which you can do any time from your house.

Paul Yohannan, that's a real problem. Pain makes it WAY harder to engage intellectually or physically. I don't have a chronic condition, but when I get sick or have a temporary injury, I totally find myself resorting to food and Netflix. It's hard not to. I have a low tolerance for pain and don't know how people function with chronic pain.

:hi: There, 34 here. Drinking water is definitely one of the things I started doing more often after I turned 30. I see the difference in my body if I don't drink enough.

Also, staying active is totally and undeniably one of the best ways to keep it going.
I have two kids, and if I don't push myself, I will Not have the energy to accomplish anything during the week. Their energy level is YIKES!!!!!!!:doh1::dead:

I started noticing the differences around age 32. I am 35 now. I started to have menstrual problems, ovarian cyst, and fibroids. The weight also crept up on me as well.. my face started looking different, thinner, and my eyes look tired with dark circles. What a difference the 30's make. In my opinion, downhill from there, at least physically. But I know that is not the case with everyone.

I noticed my metabolism beginning to slow when I was 28. As I entered my 30's, it got worse and I really struggled for about a year and a half to get the weight gain in check. At the same time, a child came into my family and we had to adjust to that.

What I have learned is that there is no 'one-size-fits-all' approach to health. Everyone's body is different. As the human genome is further processed and understood, it is more clear that different people groups have adapted to thrive in different ways. I tried the blood-type based diet (and still follow that to some extent - but my daughter and I share a type and my wife is the outlier; I don't want to kill her with our food) and that seemed to work fairly well. As for exercise, I don't after 7 p.m. and I prefer to get it in before 4. In short, I have been learning more about my body in my 30's. I am learning what works for me, and what doesn't (like only eating across a 12 hr. span of the day).

I have started becoming more focused about eating healthier as well as wanting to keep in good shape. Me and my husband are both 34 years now, and we started getting back into a diet system sometime in the middle of january this year. We also did this in early 2011 as well, and then tried keeping up with it until sometime in 2013 were we somewhat fell out from it. I fell out from this after getting a negative comment from my mother which made me really depressed, it also made me feel as all of my efforts were meaningless. But this year I am even much more motivated and even after two weeks when starting with the diet system I could already see results, this is also very encouraging and helps me to keep on going on. Even though I do know that this can go a bit up and down untill one finally manages getting down to one's ideal weight, but I am a lot more decided and better disciplined nowadays. :)

And then I do bike and go for some walks during a day, so far this is what I do as physical activity, but I also have wishes of joining in a fitness center or any other activity where I can excersise more thoroughly. I have always loved being a lot active in a physical way ever since I was younger too, also still have a lot of energy in me. It is a bit funny as I heard from someone once who was 32 back then when I was in my middle 20s, who told me that he used to be as energical as me during my age but now that he was in his 30s he wasn't as energical anymore. I don't feel this way myself, although I sure still need to become more fit. But I have noticed that when I eat healthy and get more down in weight towards the right weight scale for me, that I then seem to become even more energical again.

I also want to find the right products for the skin of my face, I have never really found out what type of skin I have. I did try some skin creams and lotions, but didn't find anything which helped my skin becoming better. I do have heard as well as noticed that the skin of my face seemes really dry, but I have also had a few acnes problems in it too, and when I was younger then my face skin seemed very oil like. I look forward having a face analysis, as now I really would like to take better care of myself in every way. I also want to know what cream for around my eyes is good to use too, as I can get very itchy and red-like around my eyes and I believe it might be getting quite dry around there too.

I also would like learning what type of make up would be good for my skin now, and to learn applying make up which is right for me in my now age. As our face skin will change when we are aging, so it would be nice getting some new and good advice with this.

I look forward becoming more the way I used to be earlier weight-wise as well as feeling more healthy and in good shape. Also to feel more fresh and feeling as I look good, feeling content with one's self as well as being healthy will help one to also feel more happy. Or at least in my case it will. As i have struggled a lot with low self-esteem, didn't always think of myself as very beautiful. And even though I still have flaws and some things I am not too happy about lookswise, I really want to work on this and to build up my self-esteem as well as to try my best with being content with myself and the way I look. To learn seeing the beauty I have, not only from the inside but also from the outside. As I think we all were created beautiful in God's picture, we just need to find this and to learn loving the way we were made. For example; When looking at some of my pictures from some years back I realize now that I didn't looked as bad as the way I would critize myself back then, I think it is easy seeing a lot more faults at the time when having a picture made of ourselves. This is something I want to work on, to learn appreciating the beauty one has in each given moment of one's life. As it would be a pity to keep on thinking badly about the way we look, instead we should learn appreciating the beauty given to us which was given from God to us.

The very best thing a person can do if trying to achieve better health is to,

Educate yourself about how your body actually works,

and most importantly,

keep it to yourself. Others will either try to steer you to some goofy diet or program, or talk you out of your efforts entirely. You don't need validation from anyone, including those closest to you.

You're welcome. :D
