  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I just got back from this movie and thought it was fantastic. The throat-slitting didn't get me so much as the sound they made did. That gurgling was pretty bad, but still, I managed fine.

I originally wasn't interested just because Depp was in it, but once I realized Alan Rickman was in it too I just had to go. Oh, that voice of his! I swear he could stand and read from a dictionary and I'd swoon. XD

Also, I may be alone in this, but I thought the boy who fell in love with Joanna and busted her out of the asylum was insanely hot. Just something about him I guess.

Well, guess who just received an Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. ;)
he deserves it. he is insanely talented in the acting department. he picks off the wall roles at times, many of them dark characters, but he always does an awesome job of bringing them to life.

I'd recommend anyone who liked the movie to pick up a copy of the original Broadway cast recording with Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury, or the also excellent revival with Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone. The score to Sweeney Todd is perhaps the greatest ever written for the stage in English, but it is unfortunately edited to shreds and performed by non-singers in the new version. If you thought it was enjoyable in the film, you will be stunned to hear it as the masterpiece it was composed to be: complex, seamless, and stunning.

After watching some other versions of the songs, on youtube I admit, I think that the movie did some of them half decently. "Epiphany" was beautiful. They destroyed "A Little Priest" though.

I agree that not all the songs are unpleasant or ruined in the movie. I absolutely loved the performance of "Not While I'm Around." I think the problem is more that the score as a cohesive whole was compromised by the extensive cuts, and that you lose a lot of beauty and impact of the songs when they are not being performed at their peak by expressive, top-notch singers who are able to bring out both the emotion and musicality fully.

The musical aspect kinda reminded me of a Shakespeare play. It took about 5-10 minutes to adjust, then it was intelligible.

5-10 minutes? Not bad. I could barely understand it at all the first time through, had to look up all the lyrics online and then watch it again with the captions on.

I have spent the past 8 years with a woman who is constantly asking "What did he/she/they say?" during movies. I have adapted quite nicely to my role as a translator. ;)

Heee. My mom prefers "What's going on? Why's that happening?"

Usually, she asks right when the explanation is being given.

She walked in right at the end of Sweeney and asked, "So, why's he killing everybody?"

I was quite intrigued by the trailers of this movie. I waited until it was on DVD to see it. I thought it was fantastic. Yes, the gore in it was quite excessive (I had to close my eyes and turn away in some parts) but the excellent performances and the moody atmosphere more than make up for it.

Johnny Depp is quite possibly one of the finest actors of the modern era.

I *finally* saw this a few weeks ago... and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! Took me a bit to get used to Johnny singing, but oh it was brilliant! Granted, I would have seen it, even it if it was the most horrible movie in the world, simply because Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman were in it :p
