  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Superiority Complex.

Well, in relation to the OP, if we are all so careful to test what we believe, and ensure it remains within our own reality, or that of our church, that would suggest the very opposite of endemic superiority.
I agree, needing to believe in myths are hardly the characteristics of people with a superiority complex problem in fact I think the opposite would be true, it would point towards people who are very unsure of themselves and who would be unable to cope with their lives (or their deaths) on their own.

On the other hand.....

Ask religious people how they would feel if they were to somehow lose the backing of their gods, most of them if not all of them would just fold, which means their mentally generated Gods give them a feeling of elation and well being which could cause them to feel ever so slightly superior.

I am sorry, but that really is not true. You clearly don't have a clue what you are talking about.

It is a natural part of any faith for that faith to be tested, and for that testing to involve 'losing' God. Some people end up losing their faith altogether, others become strengthened by it. It is not right at all to say that most if not all of them would just fold, because probably the vast majority of believers who have had a faith for more than, say 20 years, will have experienced this at some point. And those who have not, soon will.

St John of the Cross called this the Dark Night of the Soul. Isaac of Syria talks of it as experiencing the abandonment of God.

Having experienced this dark night, and come through it to find God once more, the end result is not superiority, I can assure you. It is far more gratitude, and a request to God to keep us from any further such trial, if at all possible.

THE DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL / SAINT JOHN OF THE CROSS
DURING the time, then, of the aridities of this night of sense (wherein God effects the change of which we have spoken above, drawing forth the soul from the life of sense into that of the spirit--that is, from meditation to contemplation--wherein it no longer has any power to work or to reason with its faculties concerning the things of God, as has been said), spiritual persons suffer great trials, by reason not so much of the aridities which they suffer, as of the fear which they have of being lost on the road, thinking that all spiritual blessing is over for them and that God has abandoned them since they find no help or pleasure in good things. Then they grow weary, and endeavour (as they have been accustomed to do) to concentrate their faculties with some degree of pleasure upon some object of meditation, thinking that, when they are not doing this and yet are conscious of making an effort, they are doing nothing. This effort they make not without great inward repugnance and unwillingness on the part of their soul, which was taking pleasure in being in that quietness and ease, instead of working with its faculties. So they have abandoned the one pursuit,[71] yet draw no profit from the other; for, by seeking what is prompted by their own spirit,[72] they lose the spirit of tranquillity and peace which they had before. And thus they are like to one who abandons what he has done in order to do it over again, or to one who leaves a city only to re- enter it, or to one who is hunting and lets his prey go in order to hunt it once more. This is useless here, for the soul will gain nothing further by conducting itself in this way, as has been said.

Experience of abandonment - St Isaac of Nineveh and Syrian Mysticism / - Bishop Hilarion Alfeyev

By assuming that we all have a 'mentally generated' God (a comment not lacking in superciliousness, btw), and that this concept of God is infinitely fragile, you miss a lot. There are a great many people in this world whose faith is not fragile, but who also do not take a superior attitude to the world. Our model is Christ himself, who shows us that a Christian leader is the one who gets down on his knees, and washes other people's feet. In wordly terms, the leader is served. In Christian terms, the leader is a servant of his brothers and sisters.

You suggest that admitting we cannot survive on our own is a weakness. Actually, it is not. Man is a gregarious creature, and one of the most harmful things to do to any of us is to impose social isolation, whether physically or emotionally.

The myth in what you say, if there is one, is this;

people who are very unsure of themselves and who would be unable to cope with their lives (or their deaths) on their own.

You seem to indicate that by doing away with the concept of a personal God, an atheist is capable of standing alone before the universe. In fact, nobody can do this for long; if we tried, we would find insanity. The atheist just replaces God with some alternative; a belief in humanity, or in reason, or in science, probably without realising it. No man is an island.

And I'm trying to get you to understand that labels and claims mean nothing when humans are involved.

In other words, you have no faith in Christ nor do you know Him. Thanks for clarifying; I only had to ask like 3 times, right? :p

You do realize you're disposing of reams of Scripture to draw your conclusion, right? There is an entrance, and while humiliating it can be accessed; there's just no physical attraction when looking from the outside.

Yes it's best you wait for the answer before you start applauding because we know you will applaud even if her answer is rubbish, you think that if she can fool herself into believing so can you because you want so much to believe.

What?! How about responding to what is actually said as opposed to what might be said. Trust me, you might well still say the "wrong" thing, but at least it won't be about an imaginary post.

Now you're going to elevate yourself to the position of being able to determine what I want, what I struggle with, and what I don't know ^_^
Now how did I know that you were going to write that? simply because you are all the same, you kid yourself that you have the answers when in truth you have nothing, nothing but a need to believe.

Keep throwing hypotheses out there. But the fact remains that the origin of reality starts at the beginning. The assumption that man arrived here through a series of stochastic events is your belief. The need to now rationalize a Christian, the children of humanity, to that belief, is you. The "need to believe" is a conclusion based on your perspective of what has come to pass. That conclusion which you hold, is a belief. And "in truth you have nothing, nothing but the need to believe".

You may hold that we are the weak and you are the strong. This is not universal. To many, atheism is the weakness. Faith, trust, like love, like patience, like self control is aquired, is learnt, is built upon, is not a default and goes against the grain of the finite mind. Your submission is as much of demonstration of strength as is sinking to the bottom of the ocean with a 50 pound weight tied to your leg. These "fruits", abstract reality, are what are real, and the accumulation and understanding of such equivalent to the indications of prosperity the finite mind uses to cast judgment on the well being of an entity in this sphere.

To most, your subscription to materialistic chance origin is actually the crutch. From the time you consider that consciousness did not originate in this plane, that the human system cannot build itself, the scenario is similar to sitting in darkness. Like a child afraid of the dark, you cannot see what is around you. Your eyes are rendered useless, you, at the mercy of the unseen. So you are told that the darkness you witness is the light, all to be seen, a comforter, presented in the form of Darwinism. But we are blind, who you choose to lead you through the vastness of reality, is where your faith lies.

MY BROTHER,

You are, of course, choosing to overlook the fact that the Answer we have, through the Grace of God, found has worked miracles in the lives of millions over thousands of years.

i might also lovingly point out that your "answer" apparently isn't working well for you given your driven need to hang out on a Christian Website for the purpose to attack the beliefs of others in order to prove to yourself nihilistically that there are no answers to be found and so you are free to make up our own with a "clear" conscience.

Christians do not have a "need" to believe in the sense your are using the word. When coming face to face with the Living God, Christians find it impossible NOT to believe once we are led to the ultimate Truth--as would you were you to accept His Loving invitation to open your eyes as well as your mind and return home.

MY DEAR BROTHER,

Well, given that, through instances of willful sinfulness, i have, in the past, lost the "backing" of Abba for short periods of time (which seemed much Much MUCH longer than they really were!), i can give my personal testimony that i didn't "fold" but i sure was one happy camper which i came to my senses, confessed and forsook my sins, and reestablished and resumed my loving relationship with God.

"Ever so slightly superior"?--not a chance! i felt very ashamed and very foolish--and very thankful that God is eternally merciful and forgiving, even towards a wretch like me. "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound!"

It is both substance and evidence. Also the eyes of our Spirit.

What then is faith when substance and evidence lead a person towards the conclusion that there probably is no god?

"Probably" is not a statement of Faith, so I think you're in the clear.
Is that "ok' as in I accept that, or "ok" as in yyyeah rrrriiight.

It's an "okay" that is how you feel and it's perfectly valid. I disagree with the evidence but your opinion of "faith" is your own and you are entitled to view it however you like.
