Im going to be honest here. This is about me.

If I kill myself will I go to hell?

I belive in God although have been a far from perfect person. Ive been hurting mentally for the last decade due to an abusive wife. not physically just emotionally. Its torn me down so far that no matter how much I pray, how much I talk or how many minutes I take one at a time i just simply cant bear it. Im not asking for anyone to endorse or to condone suicide. Im just asking if its in the bible, how it reads, what it says.

Thanks in advance. Not many of my friends practice or belive, none actually. I have a problem with large crowds so I dont attend church. My names Michael. can someone please pray for me? im not trying to sound selfish but I have no one to turn to.

When we feel that we're drowning in the depths of despair, know that other godly people have felt the same sense of hopelessness. For example, the prophet Jeremiah emotionally hit bottom, yet he also had the wisdom to look up to the Lord and find hope. These are his honest words:

"I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, 'The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.'" (Lamentations 3:19-24)

Wrong Belief: "Life is hopeless. I see no purpose to go on living."

Right Belief: Since I choose to walk by faith, not by sight or feelings, I'm placing my hope in the Lord, knowing He has His purpose and plans for my life.

"Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken." (Psalm 62:5-6)

Here are seven Scriptural reasons to say no to suicide:

Reason #1: Suicide rejects God's offer of inner peace.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)

Reason #2: Suicide rejects God's sovereignty over the length of your life.

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.... Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." (Psalm 139:13, 16)

Reason #3: Suicide rejects God's right to be Lord over your life.

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own." (1 Corinthians 6:19)

Reason #4: Suicide rejects God's commandment not to murder.

"You shall not murder." (Deuteronomy 5:17)

Reason #5: Suicide rejects God's ability to heal your hurts.

"Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed." (Jeremiah 17:14)

Reason #6: Suicide rejects God's plan to give you hope.

"'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" (Jeremiah 29:11)

Reason #7: Suicide rejects God's power already in you to make you godly.

"His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires." (2 Peter 1:3-4)

We were created to bring glory to God:

Romans 11:36 (NKJV)
For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

1 Corinthians 10:31 (NKJV)
Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Asking God for death is asking God to cut short His plans for you to bring all glory to Himself.

Where there is life, there is hope!

"Anyone who is among the living has hope." (Ecclesiastes 9:4)

"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." (Hebrews 6:19)

Does the person who murders themselves end up in Hell? I don't know the answer to that question any more than I know the ultimate destiny of any specific person other than myself. I think there is plenty of Scriptural warrant to suggest that suicide is a sin against God, however.

I will lift up prayers on your behalf, that it be the will of God to direct your thoughts outwardly towards bringing all that you think, do, or say for His glory.

Chaplain Patrick has given you a very compassionate and accurate (in my view) biblical reply to your predicament.

May I speak as a long-term family therapist who has spent many years counselling secular people? Part of my problem in giving a response is that I don't know many details about you and your situation. The following may be areas for you to think about and pursue:

1. You say that you believe in God. But are you a committed Christian who is born again? The reason I ask is that the Scriptures state that even the demons believe that God is one and shudder (James 2:19). What is your current relationship with the Lord?

2. If your wife is abusive as you describe, have you ever had respite from her for a period? Have you and your wife sought couple counselling to deal with these issues?

3. You need to be in an encouraging and supportive group of God's people. If you don't like crowds, why don't you seek out a house church in your area? They are often warm, welcoming and committed people.

You might like to consider the points in this article, "Do people who commit suicide go to hell?"

However, I'd also recommend that you seek counselling as soon as possible as you seem, from your own statement, to be in a serious personal situation.

Thanks for the information. Ive prayed time and time again. Counseling costs money which i have none of. right now im relying on a guitar to keep me sane and am praying for myself and the ones who love me.

I dont know if Ive been "born again" I do have belifes in which i believe God and Satan or a higher and an evil. I want to belive alot.. the fear of Hell keeps me from doing anything so I must believe in that? If I had proof I wouldnt suffer in Hell or an evil place Id long ago had taken action...

In which part of the world do you live? I'm employed full-time as a counselling coordinator in a national counselling organisation in Australia. If you were in my part of the world, you could come to me free of charge because of the Australian government's generosity in funding agencies like mine.

Why don't you check with a local Bible-believing (Gospel) church to see what counselling is offered and if it would be free of charge?

From your comment I have a few questions:

1. You say that you don't know if you are born again. Have you ever confessed your sins to God and trusted Jesus Christ alone as your Lord and Saviour? Why don't you read my summary of "The Content of the Gospel"? This covers some of the essentials. Would you be prepared to respond to the content of this Gospel message that I have outlined?

2. You say you believe in God, Satan and a higher power. That's what causes some of my concern. Which God? Which higher power?

3. There is a guarantee that you will not suffer in Hell if you repent of your sin, accept Jesus' death on the cross as a sacrifice for your sin, and ask him to come to live in your heart. This will mean that you will serve him to your dying day. That's the only way out of hell. I hope I have explained that in the "Content of the Gospel" link above.

I'm happy to talk further with you openly on this Forum or in private messages about any issues relating to the Gospel, becoming a Christian, how to avoid hell and go to heaven to spend eternal life with the trinitarian God.

Friend, this sort of statement assumes an omniscience we do not possess and is a dangerous statement to make. Only God knows the heart of the person at the moment a person dies that has acted to end their own life.

Hey Mike,

I hope all is going well for you. I had to smile when I saw this post cause I feel the same way. Sometimes there are way too many negatives outweighing the positives in our lives and I'm at that point of my life right now. But I am going to continue fighting the fight of faith.

I think having positive friendships are important. Even the Word says man is not meant to be alone. I have so many hurtful relationships that I've encountered, it's hard to trust. I feel helpless at times cause I 'm a single mother with 3 boys, trying to teach them lessons about life that I've never learned myself.

Keep your head up and keep playing your music :)
