In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just wouldn't trust Joe Biden or any leftist to do Islam or any religion for that matter, justice.
Just curious, would you trust Donald Trump in the same situation?
I wouldn't trust either one to teach my kids (or grandkids) about the faith. If Biden is Catholic, I'd probably trust him more than Trump.
Be that as it may, neither will be teaching the subjects. I doubt very sincerely that there will be mass turnover in education/teachers after the election based on who is elected or not.
The whole issue seems to be sensationalism to me.

The problem with any such movement for teaching Islam in Public schools is that it would be all positive and from an Islamic perspective. Would a Joe Biden educational curriculum on Islam mention the Islamic slave trade? The global Jihad which lead to the conquest of India, Persia, North Africa, Spain, Anatolia, Egypt and the Balkans? Would it teach students about what modern Islamic societies are like and how they treat subjects like Homosexuality and the like? Would they be allowed to say Muhammad consummated a marriage with a nine year old girl?

Almost guarantee you it would a positive curriculum pointing to the achievements of Islamic society while mitigating any criticism of it. How Islamic society advanced while western Europe was in the throes of the "dark ages". Otherwise Muslims wouldn't support the Democrats and this is obviously who Joe is trying to cater to here.

In principle I don't have a problem with teaching about Islam the negatives and positives. Same with Christianity. I just wouldn't trust Joe Biden or any leftist to do Islam or any religion for that matter, justice.

Has Joe Biden advocated teaching of Christian history as passionately? He's supposedly a Catholic right? I mean I think he advocates everything contrary to the Catholic Church so I'm guessing not.

And that would be my, and hopefully anyone else's, concern... will this be comparative religion based on the political mores of the day? Or the truth?

What does he advocate which is contrary to the Catholic Church?

I'm not sure I would trust Trump either. Yet I would think a Trump curriculum wouldn't be wholly negative of Christianity like I would expect a liberal curriculum. Mainly because Trump seems to want to please conservative Christians more. Hence it's in his political interest, if he were to ever consider it.

Joe Biden being a 'Catholic' means little when you consider he advocates for everything contrary to his own Church. He supports abortion. He supports Homosexuality and LGBT issues. He would probably force the Little Sisters of the Poor to provide contraceptives. So Joe Biden isn't influenced by his Catholicism to act in a Political fashion. He has no incentive to actually provide a curriculum that focuses on Christianity fairly. The left at large stopped believing in Christianity in favour of globalism and socialism a while ago. You could expect any curriculum to be focused on non-Christian religions and it would not dare bring up uncomfortable truths about those religions.

Of course, this is all speculation. If Joe wins by a miracle, maybe he will surprise me.

Since when? I believe he has stated repeatedly that he agrees with the Catholic Church teaching on abortion.
Yet he advocates for abortion politically. His religion means nothing to him in the public arena where he prefers secular values over his supposed religion. This is why I don't take his claim to be a Catholic very seriously.

I believe he is struggling with the issue of whether it is a good idea to make Christian sins against the law in a secular republic just because they are Christian sins. That some Christians think it is a good idea doesn't mean that those who don't are "advocating" those sinful practices.

Where is the evidence of him struggling? Has he come out and said as such? All I point out is the obvious, Joe Biden's 'Christianity' doesn't seem to affect his policy decisions. Why then, should I take Joe Biden's Catholicism seriously? Oh, he had ashes on his forehead? What a loyal Catholic.

Do/Did you go to public school in America? If so you would have no need to speculate or wonder or worry about this. Christianity was and is taught in public schools when I went 30 years ago and today. as I remember it the treatment was neutral. We learned about the basic tenets, the major players (Jesus, Paul) and its spread across the western world and influence on all of western society including its clash with Islam and the Crusades. Your fears of a "liberal curriculum" are demonstrably unfounded and have been for probably 40 or 50 years.

I assume that depends on the locality where it is taught in the US? There wouldn't be a national curriculum on religion but that would be determined by the state? Though I'm glad you got a decent education on religion. My only point is I do not trust leftists to teach about religion, especially Islam.

That is my point. "Leftists" and "rightists" both have been teaching this stuff for at least the last 50 years (in the current left/right polarized political climate thats been building over that time I mean. It's obviously been taught longer than that) and it isn't anything like you fear it would be.

Right, but the question here is what Joe Biden would have in mind. Not any existing religion teaching. I stated my reasons earlier why I think Joe Biden's Idea of encouraging teaching about Islam would likely be a glorification of it. Namely, because he wants to cater to any potential Islamic voters.

Still, give me a reason to think Joe Biden's Idea of religious education is a good one. I see none at this point.

Joe Biden doesn't set public school curriculum for the whole country. All he would say is "include Islam in the study of religions", which it is in most cases already as far as I know. We learned the pillars of faith and learned about Mohammad as well. Basically, I don't even know why anybody is making a deal about this at all. It seems to already be being done. There may be local districts that deemphasize things or maybe don't do the religious history or whatever, but those are local. That's where most of those decisions get made, not by the Federal Government. I mean where you would really need to direct your attention would be to state governments and their influence on major textbook publishers not Joe Biden. That's where the real battle about what goes into the curriculum for most of the country is fought. Google Pearson + Texas + Evolution.

Then one would need to wonder why Joe Biden thinks that Islam needs to be taught in schools, if as you are saying, it already is. It is not wrong to question the content of any suggestions from the federal level to the states especially if it comes from a Joe Biden administration.

Would you say this was simply a gaff and religious education is adequate in teh USA then?

No clue. You just seem to be overly worried about what Biden could and would do given what past presidents have done or with a blind eye to what the current administration is doing right now. I don't think that Biden will be able to influence directly what gets taught across the country any more than past presidents have been able to. He seems to just be advocating the position. It will be more up to local governments and states to implement. It's not a bad or extreme position to advocate. I don't think he's planning on handing down stone tablets from on high requiring everyone convert to Islam.

As far as I recall, US history covered our history of slavery and poor treatment of minority groups. In some related courses, ie literature, child marriages were mentioned and discussed. I doubt they would shy away from these subjects just because it is related to Islam or Christianity but I suppose they could.

His comment included Christianity, Judaism and Islam, but the other two are not controversial enough to hit a lot the news feeds. The feeds that wanted to generate a biased uproar focused only on Islam.

Trump has proven that divorce, adultery, other sexual immorality (bragging about being to get away with forced gripping of any woman due to his money), and more does not sway the conservatives to even question his decisions/morals. In his own words, he could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and not lose votes (
).

How is any of this wanting to "please the conservatives?" He has shown he need not bother pleasing them as most simply turn away when he behaves badly, and then turn right back to root for and vote for him later.

Trump would never qualify as a teacher ---- he is poorly educated and basically ignorant. He is a disaster as a President but as a teacher of anything religious --- well, that completely boggles the mind.
