Starving squirl

Immagine for a second that you are a starving squirrel (gah cant change the title ). The only source of food is a small stack of nuts, however it is in an open field, and many hawks are flying overhead that field. You also have several starving squirrel children to feed.

Would you take the risk, and try to bring back the nuts to your family?

Maybe they lack the intelligence, but animals certainly have an awareness of threat.

I'd take the chance and go out into the field. Now if there were no children to worry about, I'd probably wait a while and hope that the hawks would go away. The thing about this is that hawks want to kill a squirrel because there are little hawk children who need to eat. So nature can be cruel. Since I believe that there is a God, I'll believe that God knows what he is doing and that everything will fall into place as it should. I know that there is a prophecy in the Old Testament that the lion and the lamb will lie down together and a little child will lead them.

I personally believe that squirrels have souls. If there are trees and horses in Heaven, then there are probably squirrels there as well.

Organize the squirrels into a militia, and round up food-stealers and other criminals among your ranks. Trade the criminal squirrels as food to the hawks, in return for safe passage to the nuts. Gather all the nuts, eat most of them, planting the rest in safe areas for future generations.

It's pretty extreme, but it sounds like they're desperate.

Or, if the squirrel is an objectivist, he could just eat the children*. All the family is thus spared starvation.

*But the little baby squirrels have rights too! You might say. Well, Hitler would have said that too.
