The song “stairway to heaven” by Led Zeppelin is the most requested rock song of all time. When I stopped to think about it seemed kind of strange given the fact that rock is commonly preferred for its party, rebellious, darker perspective spirit. This fact struck me as odd given the slow melodic tone and the message of redemption illustrated in the song itself. The song goes back and forth between a symbolic woman and the writer’s personal feelings but the two seamlessly connect at the end. A woman chasing after the things she thinks will make her happy only to find they failed and the doors to heaven were all closed. The writer expressing a desire to free himself with a common truce allowing the piper to lead all humanity to peace. But even after reflecting on the analogies and metaphors I still couldn’t figure out why this song would mean so much to the fans of rock. But then a verse stuck out in my mind. “Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run …There's still time to change the road you're on.”
I think this verse means more to the rock community than anyone will ever truly understand. When I think of its listeners I recall my own experiences. Chasing after the things I thought would make me happy only to find a dead end stool at a bar, glancing around wondering how on Earth I got here, and wondering if this was it. Is this all? Pretty women, a fast car and a inexhaustible bottle. Not considering myself a evil person but nonetheless feeling a sense of bitter worthlessness that reflected a sarcastic out look of life. I wondered how many rock fans shared my nights glancing around wondering if they were stuck; if this is just who they are and there’s no time to turn back now. How sweet and comforting are the words of that song to hear. No wonder so many have picked up the phone and dialed in the radio station to hear one more time.
“Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run …There's still time to change the road you're on.”

This is why I think the song is the most requested of all time. What do you think?

I once heard an interview with Led Zeppelin’s manager in which he described walking into Jimmy Page’s room one night to find that all the lights were off and the room was filled with burning candles. Jimmy was sitting cross-legged in the center of the room with his guitar wresting limp on his lap. Somewhat alarmed by this he asked Jimmy if everything was OK and he got the calm reply, “I’m waiting for a transmission.” The Battle of Evermore is an equally penetrating song. I don’t think they wrote either of these songs, the angels did. These two songs are so completely beyond anything else they wrote, it is pretty obvious that these rockers didn’t have this in them, it was given to them. On their own they are anything but good spiritual examples, and yet even people like this the angels can make use of when they make an effort. Stairway to Heaven is a redemption song about renouncing materialism and seeking the spiritual.

Yes both songs did probably come from angels, fallen ones.

Page was well known for his interest in the occult, even bought Alastor Crowley's house I believe.

That being said, that's one of the few songs I can still play on guitar from memory.

Eeck gads, you've been infected by the demonic influence too?? ;)

If the message is demonic then provide us with an example from the lyrics, please?

The fact that someone has some serious problems doesn't prevent the angels from using them at the appropriate time, or the angels wouldn't be able to operate through ANYONE now would they?

While on the topic of demonic music, what's the real story behind Hotel California by The Eagles?

Queen of Light took her bow
And then she turned to go, The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom And walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morn-ing light. The dark Lord rides in force tonight And time will tell us all.

Oh, throw down your plow and hoe, Rest not to lock your homes. Side by side we wait the might Of the darkest of them all.

I hear the horses' thunder Down in the valley below, I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon, Waiting for the eastern glow.

The apples of the valley hold The seeds of happiness, The ground is rich from tender care, Repay, do not forget, no, no.

Oh, dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light. The apples turn to brown and black, The tyrant's face is red.

Oh the war is common cry, Pick up you swords and fly. The sky is filled with good and bad That mortals never know.

Oh, well, the night is long The beads of time pass slow, Tired eyes on the sunrise, Waiting for the eastern glow.

The pain of war cannot exceed The woe of aftermath, The drums will shake the castle wall, The ringwraiths ride in black, Ride on.

Sing as you raise your bow, Shoot straighter than before. No comfort has the fire at night That lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night, Sing to the mornin' light. The magic runes are writ in gold To bring the balance back. Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining, The clouds of blue roll by, With flames from the dragon of darkness The sunlight blinds his eyes.

I love pretty much everything Led Zep did so I don't think these two songs are 'beyond' them. Just because a group of guys who you found 'morally questionable' wrote songs with lyrics that strike a chord with you spiritally, doesn't mean those songs must have been written by angels. God created these guys and they've got/had the same longing for a relationship with him we all have. God gave them heaps of talent and they used it well. Get over it.

BTW, I went to an engineering college, and like all true engineers, I love Led Zeppelin. I saw Jimmy Page in concert when he was with the Firm. Even though it all sounded like a hard edged Bad Company rather than sounding much like Led Zeppelin, I liked them too, so I really enjoyed it.

I'm 1 year off finishing an engineering degree. I guess that explains my love for them too. I'm also a drummer so John Bonham is one of my heroes.

Some times I post the same topic on different forums just because the responses are so different.

I posted on what can only be described as a unbelievers forum and of course I posted from a Christian perspective and they all began showing me how Zeppelin was pagan in a attempt to void the validity of my observation. “Zeppelins pagan, they’re our band, get out of here Christian.” Was the overwhelming response.

I posted on a atheist sight and they had no spiritual insight or perspective to add at all save a few sarcastic comments to attempt to mock the point I was making.

I posted here in a Christian sight and again the reminders of how Zeppelin was involved in paganism come up although whether or not the band was Pagan , Christian, or worshiped Barney had any baring on the point.

The point is the song touches people in a profound way. It reaches out to the lost. If I dare say....it's probably a good thing Zeppelin did not call themselves a Christian band because if they did the unbelievers and the lost would probably dismiss the message as more Christian pandering. With things as they are the song sneaks a Christian message in on them bypassing their defenses and ultimately leading them to CHRIST. I'm not saying every song Zeppelin sung, just this one. I think it is good.

Actually, I heard an interview with Robert Plant where he addressed this more coherently than 99% of people I've heard try to discuss the subject. He said, "It all goes back to Robert Johnson and the Crossroads." Robert Johnson supposedly (and I believe truly did) sold his soul to become a virtuoso blues player, in much the same way Niucolo Paganini is alleged to have done in order to become a superhuman violinist.

I think that some Rock and Roll is covertly satanic, often not even with the artist’s awareness. I knew a really excellent guitarist who was not Christian at all, but he said he knew exactly what I mean. He said that sometimes he would play “power cords” and it felt like he was at the front of a satanic church. He had no satanic inclinations of his own of course, but he agreed with me that there is a disturbing truth to the legend of Robert Johnson.

Like the muses, the Greek goddesses of artistic inspiration, deceased good and evil musicians can be called on when playing music, just as saints and their evil counterparts can be called on in prayer (in voodoo anti-saints are called Orisha). I once saw a really talented band that admired Jimmy Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vahn, literally channel both of them as they played Little Wing. It sent chills down my spine, they were just so into these musicians with so much heart that it invoked their presence. In the same way, without really intending it, musicians with no morality unconsciously call on Robert Johnson.

Maybe not, but there is a ladder in Genesis 28:12. :)
