I am allergic to penicillin -- so I cannot tolerate Blue Cheese although Blue Cheese Dressing was one of my favorites.

Then the doctor told me that mushrooms were also off limits because they are fungi.

So I stay away from those too as they gave me hives.
I take it you can't be around moldy bread or stuff that's been in the fridge too long, either?

ufonium, your talking about wearing a corset made me do a double-take too. :p

Hey, I study the 19th Century. You can't fault me for using 19-century terminology every now and again, can you?

Anyway, it might as well be a corset. I should've gotten married five years ago, before I discovered beer:p

Hi everybody. I went to the Lutheran church to see my two nieces get baptised today. I've never been to a Lutheran church before. THe baptism wasn't anything that I expected...I had expected pouring or sprinkling..but it was neither. The pastor basically just made the sign of the cross on their forheads with his wet finger.

Anyways, I got a big kick out of this bird that sat at the window next to me and watched me through almost the whole service. :)

Roman Catholics do that sometimes too.

Why are people so afraid of immersion baptism? :( I was rather apprehensive about it but I decided to cowboy up after learning the Greek word for baptism means 'immerse'. Thirty seconds of embarrassment beats regretting not being immersed for the rest of my life.

30 seconds of embarrassment? I would have experienced sheer bliss.

Good thing you weren't baptized 1700 years ago .. they did it in the nude.

Some priests in the OCA told us that a lady was baptized in the nude because she wanted to follow tradition. Well, they used sheets and had women surrounding her to protect her modesty. It was done very very carefully.

 My horse trough sister.

I think someone else may get use out of the horse trough that I was baptised in. They are still deciding whether they want to be immersed or not.

I hope they do want to be immersed. I wouldn't go back and have a "pouring" for anything.

I was listing embarrassment as a possible criticism an adult catechumen might bring up against immersion baptism, NOT saying that embarrassment was all I personally experienced or even PART of what I experienced.

They still do for children. I wore jeans and a t-shirt into my baptismal font to protect my modesty.

Here in Los Angeles, the priests usually tell the folks to wear a white bathing suit with a white T-shirt. In the winter or summer, it can be very hard to find a white bathing suit. Many just wear white shorts and white T-shirts.

One Antiochian church made baptismal gowns for all the people being baptized. Then they wore them for the entire week. I've seen that done in Africa also. I guess if you are in an outdoor baptistry, the garment can dry rather quickly on a sunny day.

I didn't have any white clothes and that was fine with Father. He stopped the service to allow me to change to different jeans and t-shirt. I wore several layers for modesty reasons.

I chose a dark color for modesty reasons as well. I didn't realize though, that the Greeks want to rub as much of your body down with olive oil as they can get their hands on. So my mid-section was exposed for a couple of minutes, which was kind of embarassing.

After I came out of the water, I was wrapped up in a white sheet and white towels, and then changed into my new white skirt and blouse that I had.

Here's a pic:

I'm Antiochian so my priest just used a Q-tip. :) He used another for my chrismation afterwards. We don't have any of those myron brushes or whatever they're called. When my bishop did a chrismation at my parish, he also used a Q-tip.

On the first anniversary of my baptism, we had another baptism, only Father had forgotten scissors for the tonsure. So I lent him my trusty pocketknife... :D

I don't remember what I was ba[ptized in I was 4 so I don't think it was in the nude. When my sister in the Lord was baptized she wore dark clothes for modesty reasons also and she was dunked....I mean immersed

When my goddaughter was baptized it was done in the greek way and she was only 1 so she was nude. I was told to hold my hands out and had oil poured into them and then told to rub it on Larissa. She was standing there shivering and my hands were so full I couldn't rub it on her so I did what any 11 year old would do. I dumped it on her head and then rubbed it on her! At the back of the room as I opened my hands and let it pour on her head I hear STEPHANIE!!! What was I supposed to do I tell you? Larissa just starts spluttering and so surprised she can't cry.
