Actually, it's one of the few "technician" careers for which there is zero official oversight, so you can declare yourself a piano tuner and start tuning today. But, if you break somebody's piano you'll probably wish you'd done some training
There's a piano tuners guild but probably less that a fifth of professional tuners bother to join it. I've studied organology (study of instrument construction, not just organs as the name may lead you to think) so I know how the piano works, and I've been tuning other instruments my whole life, so I think I could probably learn from a good book. But, I'd like to have a junker piano to play around with to start. I have a very old piano, but it's actually a sought-after brand with way too much potential to be a practice cadaver, so to speak. So, I'm thinking of buying some tools and breaking some of my friends and families' pianos to see if I can fix them
