What's involved in becoming a piano tuner? I'm looking for work

Actually, it's one of the few "technician" careers for which there is zero official oversight, so you can declare yourself a piano tuner and start tuning today. But, if you break somebody's piano you'll probably wish you'd done some training

There's a piano tuners guild but probably less that a fifth of professional tuners bother to join it. I've studied organology (study of instrument construction, not just organs as the name may lead you to think) so I know how the piano works, and I've been tuning other instruments my whole life, so I think I could probably learn from a good book. But, I'd like to have a junker piano to play around with to start. I have a very old piano, but it's actually a sought-after brand with way too much potential to be a practice cadaver, so to speak. So, I'm thinking of buying some tools and breaking some of my friends and families' pianos to see if I can fix them

For a long time, piano tuning was the preferred career path for blind people with good aural skills. So a lot of piano tech programs are part of schools for the blind, though most of them now admit sighted students too. Oddly enough, most piano tuners I know (and I think this is true industry-wide) are not pianists. Playing the piano doesn't require as much aural skill as many other instruments, so pianists are generally not the best at tuning anything, pianos included.

Its more fun to take a snapshot of their desktop, make that the background image, and then hide all their desktop icons. The computer screen looks exactly as they remember it but no amount of clicking on the icons will do anything

OBOB is really strict on non-Catholic posters it seems... or at least with Orthodox. *shrugs* I wonder if I'll be warned/banned for my post there. It's a shame because I'm generally known as "Catholic-friendly." Catholicism is awesome and I get along with so many Catholics. On livejournal I have almost as many Catholic friends as Orthodox ones and we all get along great. But the Catholic triumphalism of OBOB can mystify me. This doesn't apply to everyone, of course. *hugs OBOBers who don't feel the same way towards TAW*

No. I've seen boughtwithaprice and Paul S reading that thread and the post is still there, so it must pass muster under the rules.

I mean, this is just hysterical. They love to quote Jesus's words about "if the world hate you..." when something happens to them, but when the subject of our persecution comes up, it's God's wrath being visited upon us.
