I've known about puppy mills forever, and have never and will never buy a pet from a pet store for that reason. But man, this site just tore me up. If you're an animal lover, tell everyone you know about this site: http://www.prisonersofgreed.org

I hate animal cruelty. I remember reading about a rabbit who was duct-taped to an explosive and thrown in a lake when her owner got tired of her... luckily she survived and was rescued.

Here's another site for any of you ladies who might be considering estrogen therapy sometime in the future for symptoms of menopause... there's something you need to know about Premarin. http://www.premarin.org/

Since I missed the discussion in the old Taverna about less-than-competent computer users, I thought I would add my two favorites to the new and improved Taverna:

The first was my dad who, after deciding his computer didn't have enough memory (this was back in Windows 3.11 days) went looking for big files he "didn't need." Well, he comes across this "autoexec.bat" file and, thinking it to be a big waste of space, trashed it. A whole lot of nothing happened the next time he started that computer.

Even more amazingly, in 1997 one of my professors got a computer in his office, and was using the mouse to move the cursor around the screen (this may very well have been the first time he ever touched a computer, as amazing as that sounds). Anyway, he's moving the cursor slowly to the right, and the mouse reaches the edge of the desk. So, he keeps going, moving the mouse around in thin air and getting mad because the cursor isn't moving anymore. :)

A long time ago, in a galaxy far away, I was a sort of informal volunteer at an animal shelter. They never officially hired me, I just started showing up and helping with the animals, playing with them, and helping prospective adoptive pet parents. This led me to getting the insane orange fuzzballs who are now collectively known as The Orange Mafia, but I digress. Anyway, many of the animals who ended up there were strays, but some were cruelty cases, and they sometimes were unbelievable. I think the meanest and weirdest I heard about was someone who took two cats, stuffed them in a box, duct taped it good and tight, and threw it in the park! They don't know how many days the poor kitties were languishing in the hot sun in their own filth with no food or water before someone found them. They were sooooo sick, and I'm not sure they ever did recover or not.

And that site you linked to is gross. But besides being in meds, sometimes there's animal pee in cosmetics. Next time you're tempted to buy a cheap shampoo, check the ingredients and see if "urea" is in there. You'd be surprised at how often it is.

Hello everyone!

Back from the smoke pit... (aka the Chapel... that is rather small and when Father goes wild with the incense... ) and a rather solemn vigil... Father was really tired too... but I managed to talk to him for a little bit and got all the wedding issues taken care of. YAY!

Gotta get to bed early since we have DL tomorrow at 7 am....

Oh come on!! Even the Geekeria was more fun that this quietness... :sorry:

Ok, well, since everyone seemed to really enjoy the nostalgia the other night, what do you do when you really feel like getting lost in the past?

Me, I will put on an '80s Greatest Hits album and go ride the back roads I used to ride when I was a teen. I saw an old buddy just the other day that I haven't seen since high school and we talked about old times and man, it really set me off for the whole day and I had this glazed look in my eyes and a wistful smile all day.

So, what gets you going?

A lot of the same things as you mentioned... Over Spring break when I went home to Finland (I call both here and Finland home) I got this EuroHits CD with a bunch of songs that were in when I was in high school. I tend to drive around and sing along until I lose my voice...
I also have an album from the year I was an exchange student in the US (93-94) and take peeks at those now and then...
And when I go to Finland I try to get together with a friend that I've known since first grade (we've had our fights but always made up and are still friends) and we'll just geek out completely with memories and what not...

Ok, well if I'm going to get up for 7 am DL tomorrow I'd better head to bed... then I get to drive 4.5 hrs to see my husband...
