Even more amazingly, in 1997 one of my professors got a computer in his office, and was using the mouse to move the cursor around the screen (this may very well have been the first time he ever touched a computer, as amazing as that sounds). Anyway, he's moving the cursor slowly to the right, and the mouse reaches the edge of the desk. So, he keeps going, moving the mouse around in thin air and getting mad because the cursor isn't moving anymore. :)

LOL We used VNC on some of the older computers before we started converting all the sites to Terminal Services. It was so much fun to shadow someone's session and mess with them. Essentially, you have their desktop on your screen and can see whatever they are doing and your mouse controls their pointer.

Soooooo....you wait till they are clicking and move the mouse just a bit before they click and watch them jiggle the pointer a bit to get it straightened out. I know, it's an abuse of power but it sure is fun. :D

Its more fun to take a snapshot of their desktop, make that the background image, and then hide all their desktop icons. The computer screen looks exactly as they remember it but no amount of clicking on the icons will do anything :)

Cruel, I know :p

Good morning Kolya

Morning John! "Christ has ascended in Glory"!

I was just being amused by your cruel humour;) I think I've pulled some similar stunts.

I was just telling Stefan by e-mail that a young lady from OC.net is in town, but she's never given me her real name. I respect her privacy, but it's unusual to go halfway round the world and not meet over a cup of coffee. She's here on a choir tour, and PM'd me first to ask what the country was like and where were the Orthodox churches. She even sent me her whole itinerary, so I know where she is. But I can't call the Hotel and ask for >>>>. (Her Screen name) They'd think I was nuts. (Maybe I am, but I don't want every one to know it):p

[End of rant]

Hi TAW! Just about to leave, LATER  for church. And I was wondering if I could ask your prayers for the journey. It is a 5-6hr drive. :) so I think prayers are a good idea. Especially considering we will be flying down as we are an hour late.

For sure little sister.
But do not rush, tell whoever is driving,
better late than never.

Do not rush and do not be angry.
Patience.

I will pray though.
Good luck and may God bless you and all yours.

That is kind of like when I met Matrona and I asked her beforehand if I call her Matrona or by her legal name.

My poor husband gets all confused when I call some people at church by their 'both names'. There are still some people who I have no idea what their real name is... at church they just always go by their orthodox name.

Oh well, time for me to stop puttering around and get out the door to DL... sometimes I wish Father wasn't such a morning person...

The software/lab specialist was fond of opening notepad and typing messages in order to communicate with them (legitimately for work purposes) and it's funny how often people will freak out and start trying to close the program or just turn the computer off in a panic.

Once as he worked on a problem and a teacher was asking a bunch of questions, he made the offhand remark that "There's a new hacker, the Red Raven who has written a virus and we have it." She runs to the office to inform the principal who promptly gets on the intercom and orders, "All teachers, turn off all computers immediately!! We have the Red Raven virus!!" :D

For those on the Old Calendar, and especially for Suzannah, today is also the feast day of Saint Colmcille (Columba) of Iona.

I just installed and started playing Medieval: Total War. It is an awesome strategy game from the makers of Shogun: Total War and Rome: Total War. I stink at such games so I always have to choose the easiest setting and with this particular game/period that gave me limited choices. I am playing Egypt and have Muslim Almohads to the west and Muslim Turks to the east and north.

The Almohads to the west were weak in the beginning, so I began massing troops in the northeast to prepare for war with the Turks. The Turkish sultan, however sent an emissary to propose an alliance. Since I wasn't really ready for a war along a long border, I accepted. I am working on an alliance with the Almohads but they demand that I commit myself to aggressively fighting our common enemies to prove that such an alliance would be worthwhile.

Well, the only common enemy with which I had a border was the Byzantine Empire. Sooooooo...I attacked Lesser Armenia and the armies retreated. I then marched into Anatolia and easily defeated the small force there. I am nervously watching Trebizond to the north where they have a sizable force but I still marched into Nicea and am besieging the castle there. I've probably spread myself too thin but hey, it's just a game. Maybe I should sue for peace with the Byzantines (I already rejected an offer to end hostilities) and concentrate on the Almohads since that would secure my western borders and give me a broad but secure platform from which to launch an earnest invasion of southern Europe.

I am having a lot of fun but it makes me feel bad fighting armies that have a 3 bar cross on their banners. Maybe I should start over and play the Almohads, quickly conquer Egypt, make peace with the Turks then just fight the Catholics? :D Or am I being an idiot for letting a game bug me like this?

So the piano tuner didn't show today for my 11am appointment. I called, and the secretary was like "Oh, we had to cancel your appointment." and I was like "Oh, normally you let someone know when you cancel their appointment." So anyway, I'm at home and in town (could be lying around at my parents' pool instead) today for no good reason.

I'm thinking of getting certified as a piano tuner so that a) I can have my piano tuned on my schedule, b) I'll have a career options that doesn't involve pretending to be smart all the time, and c) so that I can feel the power of having someone stay at home all day for no reason in hopes that I might actually show up to do my job.
