Reading might also mean chanting in this context. I've never seen an ordained reader "read" anything.

It was in the car, in the dark, at night. And neither of us are very well versed in Byzantine music (He's Greek and I pretend to be ). We could probably sing 'Christ is risen' but the rest...no. I just read it happily (not in a monotone) and I think that will do

I cannot sing them per se. I don't know tone eight or whatever they are supposed to be done in but I can do a basic plainchant. At least I think I can do a passing plainchant.

Once you get the basic melodies down, it's not that hard... at least if you're using an Americanized style of it...
