How does one go about charging 700 dollars for a hand painted icon?

If you knew how much time went into learning iconography and how much work it takes to write an icon you would not second guess how much iconographers charge for icons. I would ask the same of you, how is it that your average person has well over $1000 worth of TVs, stereos, IPODs etc and yet they do not have a hand written icon? I guess it really is a matter of a persons priorities in life.

Well, NOW I've seen it all! The Orthodox are being accused (on this very forum) of being Iconoclasts.

:D Sometimes you just have to laugh. Just walking into an Orthodox church will put that idea straight out of anyone's mind.

How much do you think it costs to have a church painted? I gaurantee you New Gracanica was not painted for free. Fr. Theodore has quite a large family. Iconographers are people who have families and must support their families and provide food, clothing, shelter, insurance, etc. for their families. Even the monks who write icons must provide money to pay their utilities, food and to cover the cost of their art supplies. Art supplies are not cheap!!! You might be shocked to know that it can cost in upwards of $250,000+ to have some of the more elaborate churches painted.

And the funny thing is that I've heard iconographers (good ones) offer to paint churches for free, just materials, room and board... and been turned down because the church council can't decide what to do.

A number of years ago a local church in the Pittsburgh area had a number of iconographers (myself included) bid on writing their church for them. The price I quoted them was WAY under the going rate for a church that size. The parish council had more than enough money to pay even the person who had the highest bid (almost 2x my bid), and I know that because the parish council president told me that himself. And yet, the parish decided to do nothing. All this church had in it was an iconostasis and that was what the people there were used to and they were offended at spending so much money on something like icons.

Does anybody else have diseased grandparents mentioned on the internet? :p

I just figured the greek-language version of Wikipedia features an article on mum's village (insignificantly small these days, 163 people counted in 2001 census). The coolest part is that it mentions both grandad and grandma by name . I suddenly feel of important descend. :D
