Check with a doctor first. Lately, most doctors and physical therapists recommend cold ice packs first to keep the swelling down.

Heat, although it may feel better, could cause problems.

Who is the patron saint of back pain? LOL!

Michael, if you have really screwed up your back, you need to kill the pain ASAP. Codiene is #$@!. Get some vicodin or something stronger. If your doctor is reluctant, go to an emergency room, or clinic.

When I injured my back, the cold ice packs really numbed the pain fast. I wrapped the ice packs in cloth, so as not to totally shock my body, then I placed it over the area for 15 minutes on and off per the doctor's instructions. Soon I was fast asleep. Yeah, I did awake in pain, but I started the treatment again.

Vicodin almost killed my mom. I try to stay away from meds and use natural means.

Where is RobNJ? He knows what the ingredients in vicodin are.

Hydrocodone. It is a narcotic. It is dangerous when abused and under extreme curcumstances.

But that is not the immediate problem. It is a statistical fact that when severe pain is not relieved at onset, it has the potential to become chronic. Chronic pain is still a mystery, and chronic back pain even more so. It is still undetermined exactly what is the cause. The only thing that is certain, is that the longer it persists, the more likely it will take longer to heal, or be chronic. There are many factors that are believed to come into play, including the psychological.

I know from experience, myself and many others. Nip the pain in the bud, whatever works is good, but it is best to alleviate the pain as soon as possible.

If I am not mistaken, it is because of these findings that when you are in a hospital, they use the 1-10 pain scale to keep doctors personal judgements from creeping into the picture. If a patient says they are a 8 or 9, the pain should be treated accordingly.

The doc asked me if that would be enough, and I said yes. I am sure I can get some vicodin or something along that line if I call back and tell him it isn't doing much good.

Swelling causes pain. Ice reduces swelling.

Do you have any ice packs that you can apply?

If you wait too long to apply the ice, the swelling can damage tissue. Do it immediately.

Strangely, Physical Therapists will give ice treatments but the stupid doctors in hospitals will not. They prefer meds to numb the swelling. Ice is quite effective. Meds can cause liver and kidney impairment.

My uncle died of cancer due to prescribed pain medicines.

I thought you had a cat.

Our cat will not tolerate us sleeping in.:D

He paws our door and wakes us just as promptly as an alarm clock.

Cat for hire? :D

Well, I had a cat. I gave her to my cousin last weekend because she won't be able to move with us when we go. Michael is allergic to cats. But she wasn't much of a morning cat....she kept me up at night sometimes, because that's when she would play.

Yeah, the acetaminophen in most pain meds is bad stuff long term. You are right, ice reduces the swelling and can help a great deal. Heat can actually make it worse. Pain meds short term in combination with rest, and ice for the first few days is the best. BTW, if it is really bad, valium is the best muscle relaxer out there. (a little known fact)

Michael, I hope you are feeling better soon.

The nurse said to wait a day before I began to ice my back. She also said to make sure I take the meds the full course they prescribed for me.

Just wanted to say Hello to you all!!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of a nest of squirrels???

Hi Jenn! Your package will be waiting for you when you get home. Just in time for the icon to be blessed with Kevin being chrismated. I will be done with Reader Michael's icons on Monday. I spent about 20 of the 24 hours in the day on Saturday sleeping. It is amazing how sleepy the tylenol 3 with codeine made me. I did manage to get in about 1 1/2 hours worth of painting tonight. I hope all is well with you.

Michael

I'm right behind you with about 15 hours of sleep last night due to a migraine.

My car broke down yesterday ... blew a gasket. :sigh:
