Do any of the biblical miracles fall into this category? Heck, even the resurrection might fall into this category. Are they "crap"? You can't prove otherwise.
Historic events are "untestable". You can't re-run the experiment.
There's really no point to my posting this, just ruminating. Nothing to see here. Carry on and God bless us, every one.
The problem is that there really isn't a scale to this. Truthfully, you just said it! You described the reason MOST people are not Christian.
My personal stance is that I believe scientifically there is a God, since it's impossible for me to know for sure if the Bible or any other world religion describes him, I simply choose to believe the Bible. That doesn't mean that I believe I am justified in criticizing another's belief in a different religion because of my belief. In reality, can you honestly say that you have a better reason for believing in your version of religion that a Hindu, or Muslim?
Furthermore, how do you know? You can't.
Some Muslims have demonstrated the will to kill themselves and thousands other for their beliefs. I highly doubt that your belief in God is any stronger or unfaltering than their belief.
This is why I stress that non-empirical belief is fine as long as you don't allow it to restrict you from acting empirically. In fact, it's necessary to form a belief before testing an idea. The stipulation is that you are supposed to abandon that belief if it turns out to be false. There's nothing wrong with that.
We human's have a tendency to want to maintain our beliefs because we stake our ideas of the nature of the universe on them. Along the way we forget that no one really knows what the words of the Bible mean. We forget that most of our ideas about what the Bible mean come from the interpretation of a few select men. It's very common for these meanings to change with time. Faith healing peaked after WWII (when people needed that message.)
Science is NOT a religion. Ultimately, a Biologist doesn't want to disprove God's existence, he simply wants to know the truth. That's why almost everyone who devotes their life to the study of life believes Evolution is true, because it simply is too perfect of an explanation not to be true. Furthermore, all conjectures that contain the premise that evolution is true turn out to be true! The examples go ON AND ON. Here's one. A long time ago it was almost un-heard-of to have a hemophiliac female because of the way the gene works you have to have a man and woman with the hemophilia gene to have a female child with it and most hemophiliacs didn't survive to reproduce. Now, medicine makes it so that hemophiliacs can survive and the number of females with it are spiking. Natural selection would've eliminated that mutation eventually because it was negative.
Now lets look at sickle cell anemia. This is a mutation that in a hetero-zygote, makes you resistant to malaria. However, the Homozygous form is sickle cell. This allele remains present because if a carrier mates with a person without sickle cell, there's a 50/50 chance the child will be resistant to malaria. In a malaria ridden part of the world, this gene is a huge advantage. Eventually you will likely see a gene mutation sprout that makes the homozygous form asymptomatic as well. Possibly an inhibitor of some kind.
Life acts like a crap shoot, and because there are so many players, the ones who randomly gain advantage are the most successful.
