I also hate the buy your friends ideology. Three of the 4 guys in my suite freshman year joined the same fraternity, and we all did it together as well as the fact that I met a lot of great guys during rush. Also, having a separate place I can go to (fraternity house) whenever I want to, to simply get away, or take a nap out on the porch between classes, or shoot some pool, is great. My fraternity won every greek award on campus available this year. It also helps because I don't have a car, but I can almost always get a ride with someone, or often borrow other peoples cars. I have told many people this, and i stand by it... going greek was the best decision of my college days.

When I first joined the campus outreach at a certain church near my college, the person who discipled me was part of a fraternity (though not for long: he graduated a semester after I met him, though he continued to be active in campus outreach and in our small group). I saw God use several people in that fraternity to spread his Gospel. After my friend joined the fraternity, he had started preaching to his frat brothers, and actually won two other people over to Christ. One of those people became the chapter's president, and was able to share his testimony with the entire house.

I think the point here is that almost any organization can be either good or bad for the cause of Christ. Let's face it, college students party and get drunk with or without fraternities, so I doubt that their presence on campus changes things appreciably.

Of course, I was never much of a frat person back in college.

this article says enough http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,270752,00.html

nothing but a bunch of losers
While I'm not a fan of every frat and sorority, I hate when people blindly clump frats together. ^^^ She's not even old enough to be posting in here, is she? Anywho, I joined a sorority this semester (Kappa Delta Chi) and it was awesome. We don't haze, we don't even call prospective members "pledges", they're "new members" (incoming members) vs. actives (current members). We do a lot of awesome things like Celebrate the Children which is a day camp for special needs children, Boys and Girl clubs which is an afternoon meeting area for kids whose parents work later than the school day, Curtain Calls and Crafts which is a story time and craft time on Saturdays for kids at the library, Highway pickup and a lot of other things. We party but it's not the staple of our activities and we have very strict alcohol rules. So it all depends on the organization. Don't lump them all together.

Every chapter is different. At my school, we are the only fraternity out of 28 that actually follow dry rush.
Yeah we have dry rush too. You're not even allowed to hold alcohol. If you're caught, you have to "de-new member" which means give back all your stuff and try again next semester...maybe.

ouch, thats a little rough

but, for those who are reading who dont know much about the greek system, every fraternity and sorority is different, and even between two different schools they can be different. Even people who dont like greeks can not deny that it provides opportunities that would not be available if you were not greek.

You may think it is simply buying friends but it goes much deeper than that. I dont go home for Easter, because my home is in Houston but I go to school outside of Albany, and I got several invitations from "brothers" in my fraternity to go eat with them and their families. They open their homes to me, and I honestly doubt that a "bought" friend would do something like that.

I've never been one to join one, but I don't think they are bad within themselves. It may be because I know a faithful Orthodox Christian whose also a sorority sister though

...and then there's those delicious cook-outs...

I'm in a sororitie in Oxford and it's really very different overseas from how you picture it here: a group of girls supporting each other , making connections and eventually building friendships. there are yes, certain standards to get in, but there's no sign of cruelty at all.

I joined a sorority last fall...Alpha Omicron Pi...And I think Greek life is a really great way to get involved in campus life and meet people..Like, just from rush week alone, I met tons of people..900 girls rushed last fall, so I definitely made a few new friends that I probably wouldn't have met otherwise...

And this is from a Facebook group I joined...Just to address some of the misconceptions about Greek life...

Think Greeks are all about parties and paying for friends?? Have the idea that sorority women are promiscuous and fraternity men are stupid? Imagine goats being sacrificed when you think of ritual? Call Greeks followers and conformists?? If so, you may want to rethink everything because in reality you're the one following the stereotypes of Greek Life given by the media and gossip.

The REAL secret behind Greek Life is simple but first lets look at some facts!

*Nationally, 71% of all Greeks graduate, while only 50% of non-Greeks graduate.
*The All Greek GPA is higher than the overall collegiate GPA.
*Since 1910, 85% of the Supreme Court Justices have been Greek.
*85% of the Fortune 500 key executives are Greek.
*Of the nation's 50 largest corporations, 43 are headed by Greeks.
*76% of Who's Who in America are Greek.
*All but two Presidents since 1825 have been Greek.
*70% of the U.S. Presidents' cabinet members since 1900 have been Greek.
*76% of U.S. Senators are Greek.
*Both women appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court were sorority members.
*Over 85% of the student leaders on 730 campuses are members of Greek-letter organizations.
*Less then 2% of an average college students expenses go towards Greek membership dues.
*A study by the University of Missouri found that Greeks throughout the US and Canada are more involved on their campuses and rate their overall university experience better.
*The same study found that Greeks are more involved in their communities; and give more generously to their alma maters.
*Greeks form the largest network of volunteers in the U.S.-Nationally, Greeks volunteer approximately 10 million hours of community service annually.
*Greek Life strongly encourages within its community to uphold the ideals that they were founded on: sisterhood and brotherhood, scholarship, leadership, philanthropy, and becoming better citizens of society.
*Hazing is against National Greek Headquarters policies.
*Nationally, Greek organizations are the largest and most visible value-based student organizations.

Now that you have read some facts concerning Greek Life, here are *some* familiar names who are Greek who might help you see how Greek Life helps people succeed!

Martin Luther King Jr, Adam Sandler, Admiral James J. Carey, Al Michaels, Ali Landry, Alice Sheets Marriot, Allen Bean, Alonzo Mourning, Amy Grant, Andy Griffith, Andy Rooney, Ann Margaret, Aretha Franklin, Ashley Judd, Aston Kutcher, Ben Savage, Bill Clinton, Bill Cosby, Bob Barker, Bobby Jones, Brad Pitt, Burt Reynolds, Cedric the Entertainer, Colonel Sanders, Coretta Scott King, Cybil Shepard, Danny Thomas, Dave Thomas, David Duchovny, David Letterman, David Spade, David Stern, Dick Clark, Dionne Warwick, Dr. Alyce Gullantee, Dr. Collette Kohler, Dr. Seuss, Drew Carey, Dwight Eisenhower, Elvis Presley, Faye Dunaway, Fred Savage, Gladys Knight, Goldie Hawn, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Garner, John Wayne, Johnny Carson, Kate Spade, Katie Couric, Kurt Vonnegut, Lucy Lui, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Jordan, Molly Sims, Neil Armstrong, Nick Lachey, Roger Ebert, Rosa Parks, Shaquille O'Neal, Sheryl Crow, Stephen Spielberg, Will Ferrel, Woody Harrelson, just to name a few...

Quotes Regarding Greek Life:
*Letters today, Leaders tomorrow
*No matter the Letters, we're all Greek together
*Not four years, but for life
*Fraternities and Sororities symbolize all that we wish to accomplish in our lives. They represent the struggles we all face as we grow. Why we cling to them no one can explain, but in the end, we are all stronger for it
*People ask why I am in a sorority and I try to explain all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority is more than letters on a sweatshirt, I say. More than traditional songs, a gold pin, rituals, and obligation, or a way of life. A sorority is learning about people, a sorority is giving without expecting a return. A sorority is earning respect from others, as well as for yourself. A sorority will not solve all your problems. But I have made good friends and found confidence there to help me take life one step at a time.
*Even though the dues I pay for are like any other club fees (though more expensive because my organization is much more than a club) go toward housing, if I WERE paying for my friends, I wouldn't be paying enough!!!

So now that you have seen a glimpse of what Greek Life is all about, I hope that you will gain a better understanding about Greeks and not give in to believing the stereotypes. After all, the REAL secret behind Greek Life isn't that we hold some magical powers in our rituals or that we only get to high places through networking. We are regular people wanting to do great things and we accomplish all of this with the skills we acquire through our time spent in our Greek organizations! Oh yeah and we have a blast doing it!

FROM THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN, YOU CAN NEVER UNDERSTAND IT. FROM THE INSIDE LOOKING OUT, YOU CAN NEVER EXPLAIN IT!

Sorry :p But I love my sisters more than anything and it really makes me angry when people stereotype us as stupid party girls when we really do great things for the community.

Well.. I guess I can only go off from my experience. I was in a sorority at a big southern school (Auburn, war eagle :) . I was in it for 2 years, then I dropped out because of many reasons... One being that many of the girls were not Christian. Also, I was Chaplain and I was not allowed to read from the Bible. Go figure. Among other reasons...

While I guess from a "worldly" perspective, there are good sororities on my campus... I HONESTLY cannot see Jesus encouraging anyone to join, and pay for, a group that is basically a huge popularity contest. Atleast that's how rush is down here. It's a big deal. It's all about getting into the "top sororities." Well what did Jesus say? He said to not be of the world... And in my opinion, sororities are very worldly, cliquish, snobby, "fashionable at all costs," spoiled, rich kids. My sorority was over $1000 a year, and that was one of the cheaper ones. I know MANY more things $1000 could go to now than stupid socials and formals and chapter. Like, um, tithing? The poor?

It's just a very prideful thing to do, IMO. I can't see Jesus of the Bible ever condoning it. Maybe I'm wrong, though..

We don't have that here, but I think it's like some of the societies we have, everyone's proud of their uniform or the jumpers they have. It's thing like the rugby boys are known for their seshing (drinking LOTS, so many rules, not allowed to leave the table so they throw up/urinate in bins!) and therefore I know some christian guys who haven't joined. You don't have to join the social activities, there's no pressure and the students guild (who oversee all clubs) are on a campaign to make that even clearer and to discourage binge drinker.

It's not bought friends, it's like the Christian Union, I've made so many friends through joining and if we were big enough to have our own office (like a lot of other societies, such as RaiseAndGive) then I'd hang out there in between lectures. The first aid society have a piddly little room, but it's always buzzing cos members crash their between lectures and store stuff there if they live off campus.

I'm currently in a fraternity and I feel like giving my opinion. Given there are a lot of bad examples floating around about fraternities and sororities, but it seems to me that there are very few about the good things that fraternal organizations do. We do a lot of good work for charities, around campus, and for the community at large. My fraternity is also dry at all fraternity sponsored events. Yes, there are a fair share of partiers and what have you but not a greater percentage than the students who aren't in the greek system. As for the buying friends part, if that's the reason that someone would join then that's wrong and I feel sorry for them. Yes, I'm friends with my brothers but I didn't "buy" them as friends. Actually, I was friends with several before I joined and I'm still just as good of friends with my friends who aren't greek. There are always exceptions and bad examples however I feel that the greek system at most American universities has been pinned with a bad reputation that they don't necessarily deserve.

I use to date a girl in a sorority. They drink all the time and have the younger girls DD for them. My ex didnt drink as much as the others but they were all nice to me, until my ex and i broke up and now they dont say much to me anymore, which i think is really lame. It seems sort of fake.

I see frats and sororities as groups for people to join and have friends around them, if you dont want to sit in your dorm all the time or if your not on a sports team.

1) There is a good chance it is because of the things she said about you after the break up, and that changed their opinions about you.

2) I could see this as being true for some, and as far as getting out of your dorm, isn't that a good enough reason? Sports wise, I believe more than half our house is on one of the sports teams at my school, but, I can think of several other fraternities on campus that your explanation could be very true. There are many fraternities because not every one fits everyones criteria.

I think they are fake. It is just a reason to party the entire college years and have to abide by stupid rules which hinder you socially, physically, and emotionally. Plus, they are known to do illegal and even deadly things to newbies. Is that something you really want to be apart of and join in on? Not me!!

Lol... I live in a frat house and love it. I joined pretty much because I redid my seniour year of high school so all my freinds went off to university and all ended up joining this fraternity, so they were all 2nd year when I came into university so they pretty much got me in. I love it... it is a great group of guys, we throw the illest jams and it just surrounds you with alot of like minded inviduals who you get along with. Doesn't hinter you socially, physically or emotionally... i would say the complete opposite.

My little sister joined a sorority.
Now she's on probation for 5 years for a DUI.

I equate Greek societies with learning to become an alcoholic sex-addict that occasionally perform some community service between bouts of binge drinking.

Yet those of us in the Greek life, over 89% graduate we average better marks than those in non-greek life, we contribute more to our communities and after school statistics show that we make more money and are more successful in life. All but 4 of US Congressesmen and Senators are Greeks.

Every sorority and fraternity is different and going greek doesn't mean that you will drink or have promiscuous sex. Did they force your sister to drink and drive because there might be peer pressure sometimes but it all comes down to your choice because no one can force you to do anything you don't want to.
