im not really for either group.
The ones at my college are very rude and obnoxious.
My friend recently joined one, and now we barely even talk. She only associates herself with her sorority.
Plus some make people do the stupidest things just to join that group..Like if the group got drunk one night, they would call someone who was pledging and tell them to drive out to get them (they could be an hour away, they wouldnt care).
I dont know. I am just not fond of the groups at all...but thats just IMO

I think they are fake. It is just a reason to party the entire college years and have to abide by stupid rules which hinder you socially, physically, and emotionally. Plus, they are known to do illegal and even deadly things to newbies. Is that something you really want to be apart of and join in on? Not me!!

A way to buy friends.
There are some exceptions...my roommate is joining one because he pretty much hangs out with all the guys in it anyway; so he figured he might as well join.

I really don't agree with frats or sororities.
One girl that I went to high school with (a Christian high school no less) graduated with me then proceeded to join a sorority at her university, and has since gone from one of the top leaders in our graduation class to someone who has strayed very, very far from Christianity.
I also have a friend who became a Christian while in college. In his freshman year he was accepted into a frat, he lived in the house first semester of his sophomore year, then he became a Christian. He said exactly what Willard said, "A frat is just a way to buy friends."
The lifestyle that follows them just doesn't meet up to Christian standards. I mean, there are always some exceptions (Christian frats and sororities doe exist), but unless they advertise that they are a Christian group, it's usually best to steer clear.

Im in one and were a very good sorority. I hate the whole "you buy your friends" argument because alot of people who say that don't understand what it really is about. Sure there are some sororities and frats who do stupid stuff and just drink and party but thats not how all of them are. I love my sorority and we uphold our girls to the highest standards of school and accountability to be good woman to our school and eachother.Each one is different.

I also hate the buy your friends ideology. Three of the 4 guys in my suite freshman year joined the same fraternity, and we all did it together as well as the fact that I met a lot of great guys during rush. Also, having a separate place I can go to (fraternity house) whenever I want to, to simply get away, or take a nap out on the porch between classes, or shoot some pool, is great. My fraternity won every greek award on campus available this year. It also helps because I don't have a car, but I can almost always get a ride with someone, or often borrow other peoples cars. I have told many people this, and i stand by it... going greek was the best decision of my college days.

I didn't join one, and I'm not normally a fan of them, but I know there are good ones out there. I just wasn't the sorority type, no biggie.

I just think the whole rushing and pledging stuff is nuts...like you have to audition to be in a group of friends and then once you get in, you are friends with people and you might not even want to be friends with someone, but they're your "sibling" so....I dunno...if it works for some people, more power to them...I just can't stand cliques, and sororities and frats seem to be just amplified cliques...I'm not a fan.

well, while we are on the greek ripfest, let me say that a fraternity wants to have members that are alike and can relate to eachother on many levels. This is the whole purpose behind the whole rush phase where they look for the people who will fit best into their chapter. What you want to look for, in the event that you should decide to go greek, is a fraternity that has the same intersts as you, so that you will have fun hanging out with them as you will always be able to talk about the same things and do the same activities.

that makes sense...but I still think the pledging and all the stuff they make you do is ridiculous...like here at my school, the "actives" (is that what they are called) take such advantage of the pledges...why on earth would you want to be friends with them?

Seriously You're 14 and have no idea what greek life is really about apart from what you see on the news when certain frats and sororities do something stupid but not all of schools are like that so don't be so quick to judge.

I wasn't expecting such a big response. But I always thought that as long as you put God first and you do your research it's ok to join one. The most important thing is that they stand for what they say they stand for and you feel safe and welcomed.
