I took an elective course in language development once, and Pinker's The Language Instinct was the assigned textbook. I read the thing in a week, ignoring the prof's reading schedule. That got me to take more courses in linguistics, which turned out to be my best subject.
Also perhaps of interest, the course was taught by Laura-Ann Petitto, who was one of the first undergrad students who worked with Nim Chimpsky. So she had first hand experience with the language acquisition of apes, and how different it actually is.
Nim Chimpsky?
Is this the name of one of the apes?
