For example, if scientists observed a distant star (which was similar in composition to the Sun) behave in a way they've never seen the Sun act, they could conclude that it's possible that the Sun will act that way at some time in the future. Also, looking at other stars can help us understand how the Sun used to be and how it could be in the future.
