There are 300. Do we need 301?
We have 300 that criminals ignore.
Obviously we didn’t since there are 1000s of laws in place.
Yet with all those laws and regulations all someone needs to do to purchase a gun in the US is be 18 for a rifle or shotgun (including an AR-15 or similar assault type weapon) or 21 to purchase a handgun. Fill out the following form https://www.atf.gov/file/61446/download which asks a few basic questions and wait a few minutes for a background check to be done based on the form that was filled out. That's if you purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer.

Other than the age limits, there are no other requirements for purchases at gun shows or from private individuals.

Rules vary by state, but there needs to be uniform gun regulations at the federal level.

I think I'm most annoyed at success/status/wealth love. Look who our society holds up as the standards - Jobs, Musk, multi-millionaire footballers. Anyone successful, rich, famous. You're either a "loser" or a "winner". And where does that leave the young observing these things and knowing they'll never achieve what society values? The public school system used to prep students for 2 paths: college and the trades. Why are the trades gone? Because our government shipped all those jobs overseas.

If I thought gun control would fix the problem, I would be for it. But I'm just being honest - the lawless don't care about your laws.

And your country is mentioned in the democide video, btw
I am assuming that it was mentioned for the timespan of 1933-1945-ish?

Yeah, it's great. And when those kids get depressed because of it, we put them on antidepressants that can increase homicide & suicide ideation

Which brings up another point - the mass shootings that are stopped by persons who were legally carrying, those never get msm coverage.
They get covered in the media when they occur.

I agree; the problem is multifaceted.

I agree we should be looking at all of that. What we need is an argument for why gun regulation should be off the table. That's where I see knee jerk reaction. It can't be a 2nd Amend. argument. We have that for our good. But if that right works against the common good, unnecessarily, it can be regulated, should be regulated. We don't have rights for the sake of self-destruction.

Why can't we regulate guns? The response can't be because that means taking them all away; it doesn't. Slippery slopes are never good arguments; they're just unhappy accidents when they obtain.

Yeah, I'm good for looking at these patterns. We are a highly medicated society. Ultimately, I think it's a culture problem. I am particularly annoyed by gun love. The immature gun fetish is unhealthy, deadly, but probably indicative of deeper existential problems. Extremism in all its forms should be rejected as inordinate and destructive. We have to figure out how to work together. I think, as Americans, we should be more pragmatic and focused on what works best. Our ideologies are killing us.

While I agree with your overall leaning, PH, I'm kind of thinking that it's not so much the ideologies as it is the sanity level (i.e. the mental health state) of those who have access to the guns and who are making dire decisions to walk into this or that public place and do what they do.

Yes, and I know that's not your fault just as the blame for past atrocities of the church cannot be laid at the present Christians feet. I only present it because I believe that's the real purpose behind the 2nd amendment - to defend against tyrannical government, should it ever arise.

You can't legislate crazy out of existence. Take the guns away, knives and pipes will become weapons. Take metal objects away, clubs and spears will become weapons. You can't take wood away, it's everywhere. What happens when you run out of objects to ban? You're left with arms, fists, legs and feet, all of which can kill. Biden needs to cut to the chase and ban arms, fists, legs and feet! Nevermind that gelatinous mass in that walnut resting on your shoulders.

I love threads where everyone is essentially talking past each other, all the while each person is thinking "I'm addressing exactly and no less than the point the other person is making ..."

:dontcare:... it doesn't get any better than this!
Sure it will, when the next bunch of kids gets shot in school and the whole thing resets.

Weapons that are much less effective at killing large numbers of people. Do you imagine that the individual in Texas would have been able to bludgeon 21 people to death as easily as he shot them?

Why? Is there some impenetrable word salad in your later posts I should be wasting my time on?

I just figured that since you thought enough to peruse the thread, you'd have the integrity (or the temerity) to go ahead and finish the job. Surely, someone as smart as yourself wouldn't want to purposely misinterpret someone else, right?

The United States seems to be prioritizing our guns over our citizens' safety. It's a higher priority to protect against what COULD happen ("they'll take all our guns!") over what IS occurring (unnecessary gun violence and death). Fear is the driving force behind our inaction. The apathy and indifference of our so called "good people" is nearly as destructive as the evil done by the bad folks. It enables this vicious violent cycle to continue.

That's what I was going to ask you. What's your problem with me?
I thought I was clear about the impenetrable word salads being a waste of time.
