If you want to start easy, and work up to the bigger documents, you could begin with the ecumenical creeds, small catechism, the augsburg confession, the smalcald articles, and the treatise on the power and primacy of the pope. Then work up to the epitome of the formula of concord, the large catechism, the defense of the augsburg confession, and the solid declaration of the formula of concord.

That's pretty much the order I did the classes, when I was teaching it.

Perhaps if you'd read it in a different order, you'd still be Lutheran. ^_^

Yes, :thumbsup:The Readers Edition with its notes and historical background make it the best so far for us laypeople. I got more out of one read of this edition than I did out of four reads of the Kolb and the other one (can't recall but it had a red cover).

That's it. I read it backwards, and picked up on the subliminal messages... :D

I really like our Reader's Editions. We got the first version when it came out, and our adult Sunday School started going through it... and then Pastor found the comments and concerns people were raising about it, so we looked at those, too. So the next year when the second edition came out, we all got new copies.

When we were considering joining the church (I was Presbyterian and Hunter was Baptist), I used the Reader's Edition extensively to better understand Lutheran soteriology (my stumbling block, coming from a Reformed backgroun) and Lutheran teachings on Baptism (Hunter's stumbling block).

He still cringes when the congregation answers the baptism question for an infant, but he understands it much better.

In time he will come to accept it as the normal and proper practice that it is. Hope also had her struggles with the idea. Thankfully we were able to find Ole Halesby's book "Infant Baptism and Adult Conversion" which really helped to clear things us. I keep a copy on my computer to read from time to time as a referesher.
