So if I'm gonna' read the Book of Concord, is there a particular edition/translation you recommend?

The Concordia Reader's Edition is an excellent translation/edition to use for your purposes. It is available from CPH.

If you want to start easy, and work up to the bigger documents, you could begin with the ecumenical creeds, small catechism, the augsburg confession, the smalcald articles, and the treatise on the power and primacy of the pope. Then work up to the epitome of the formula of concord, the large catechism, the defense of the augsburg confession, and the solid declaration of the formula of concord.
That's pretty much the order I did the classes, when I was teaching it.

Yes,The Readers Edition with its notes and historical background make it the best so far for us laypeople. I got more out of one read of this edition than I did out of four reads of the Kolb and the other one (can't recall but it had a red cover).
