Actually, I give it much thought.. and worry a lot about my health. Hell, I worry about having the strength to make it to 30. I already have shortness of breath from smoking. As far as only having concern for enjoying my life? I have too much going on to even consider that. Trust me, I wish that was all I had to worry about. I've been through more things (you wouldn't even believe) that most don't even experience in a lifetime. So I don't need the lecture on how I'm to young to have any real worries or I'm to young to understand the health disadvantages from smoking. Please don't lecture me about smoking because of my age.

So, what do you want? Approval to continue what already seems to be robbing you of your health? Go ahead, then. Do what you will with your life. In fact, have you considered taking up cursing along with smoking? Ooops, as I look at your post I see that you have already done that. Obviously, your problems are much deeper than just smoking.

I was describing a general scenario that may not be specific to you, but generally speaking will apply to the majority of young smokers.

I meant you no harm. Perhaps, there will come a day when you realize that.

Dear girl/boy,
What would you want someone to say to you then? Ok, go ahead and smoke and kill yourself? is that ok? after all this is a thread on smoking and encouragement. So please, lets keep it civil towards others. thank you, Celeste.

It's tough, isn't it? Wanting to help in some small way . . . but being pushed away, nevertheless?

I agree. This thread has been the most civil and encouraging of all I've participated on. Even the disagreements that have arisen have been handled pretty well. :)

What do you mean.. "What do you want?" I never asked for anything. From your post, it did seem as though you were referring to me. A 21 year old who's gonna do nothing but regret what I'm doing to my health by smoking, as you mentioned my age quite a few times. Now your saying I've got problems that go far beyond smoking? Please don't make assumptions about me. All I did was respond to this thread by saying that I smoked and enjoyed it. Did I not mention that I wanted to quit? Did I say I wanted approval or disapproval? <gasp> I must be really bad and have some problems now. I smoke AND used the word hell..

I really think your attitude will get you into more trouble than the smoking and cursing will. But that is just my judgment. It is God's judgment that counts (Eccl. 12:13-14).

DrBob,

Thanks for the website link. I took a quick look at several of the links. The information you provide not only helps us appreciate just how devastating smoking is to a person's health, but also helps us understand that this problem usually starts at a young age. The information to aid those who desire to quit smoking could be very beneficial to one who wants to make this deadly habit a thing of the past.

Thanks again for sharing this information.

Hi there, Michelle! I quit smoking three times, and finally was rid of them. Cold turkey isn't the only way to do it, but altogether, I believe it's the easiest to do, because cutting down is a daily frustration, one day having 20, the next 19, the next 18, the next 20 - you know what I mean!

The manner of overcoming all things that are contrary to the Way of God, has to do with His strength used, and your faith, accepting that His strength has done it, totally! This may sound very stupid, Michelle, but I believe that this is the only way to finally and completely, overcome this specious evil. Please bear with me, for a few words that I believe will strengthen you, okay!

Satan is using your addiction to nicotine, as a springboard, that will allow your spiritual defenses to be down, and thus smoking is the reason why you have all of those other things that cause you pain, and have you wonder whether you will ever be truly free. Remember that when you smoke, just as you go into a smoke-free environment, literally within seconds, all of the non-smokers in the place know that a smoker has arrived, and they can almost point you out! That is how badly, tobacco marks people, and this is why many who love God, aren't fellowshiping with other believers, [they're too ashamed], but I'm sure you know this already! Isn't it such a pain in the neck, to have this albatross around your shoulders, day in and day out?! This is a work of the devil in your life, and unless you take Jesus victory over tobacco [that He has already won for you, by His Cross], there is actually enough sinfulness in this one behavior, to neutralize the entirety of the gospel in your life, so that you will eventually come to a point where you will choose a stupid white cylnder, instead of choosing Christ! This is serious, but I have been given the way out for both you and your husband, so let's give this a try, okay?!

Michelle, I want you and your husband to look together at your child/children, realizing that they have five times the probability that they too will be smokers, because both of you smoke. Do you want to see that little girl/boy, walking about having a ciggy in the mouth at an early age, addicted to it, and heading to an early grave?

Now, this will really help you to see this isn't what you want for yourselves, and surely not for your children; this will help you to hate your habit!

Now, this doesn't make a lot of worldly sense, but I would that you both stop trying to stop smoking completely. When you want a cigarette, have one, and put all of your trust in Jesus Christ. You see, the greatest message that a person can receive in this life, is that there is a Saviour, Christ the Lord. But the greatest message a believer can receive, is that Jesus used the cross, to separate you from all of your sins! You two were "in Christ," and when that cross killed Christ, it also killed you! Read Colossians 3: 1-3:

" If ye then be risen with Christ [you have become risen with Christ, by baptism], seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2: Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth [forget your smoking, and stop making this as big as it is in your minds and hearts. Remember, our salvation comes from what Jesus did for us, and not what we do for ourselves, so give the habit into His hands, and tell Him that you aren't going to work a muscle trying to quit, but you are simply awaiting the deliverance that He has already given you! You see, this is using faith]. 3: For ye are dead [when was the last time you saw a dead woman smoking cigarettes? Receive your death "in Christ," and because you hae accepted your death in Him, then tell Him you receive His life in you! Did Jesus smoke? Can you see Him smoking? Well, when you give Him all of you, it is His work to work in you, both to will and to do, according to His good pleasure], and your life is hid with Christ in God.
"

Keep with the program, and thank God that He has given you the victory, telling Him you're awaiting that time when your own spirit is ready to receive the victory! I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I would bet that the victory comes to you both, at about the same time. Do keep me posted, Michelle, because I've made this a manner of prayer for the glory of God! Blessings unto you, and start smiling - the gift is coming!

I was reading the posts here and wanted to say that I am surprised no one has mentioned this.

As of two years ago, there is a new type of near-smokeless tobacco cigarette called "Eclipse". It heats rather than burns tobacco, so you still get the nicotine your body is craving, but, you get about 97% less smoke than the more common old-fashioned cigarette.

It seems logical for anyone who is a tobacco smoker that is concerned about their health to switch completely over to Eclipse and use it exclusively because not only does this new cigarette eliminate most of the smoke, but it virtually eliminates second-hand smoke. Mind you, you still get some smoke because it is designed to burn about 3% of the tobacco in the cigarette, because otherwise you would not taste anything. However, it is the smoke from a traditional cigarette that causes the most health problems.

Eliminate the smoke, and the smoking risks are drastically reduced.

This should be step one of any smoker who is concerned about their health and feels immediate bad effects from traditional cigarettes caused by the smoke, such as asthmatic conditions or feeling malaise, but can't get themselves to quit cold turkey.

Anyone who is a smoker concerned about the effects of smoke on their health or the health of those around them should at least be considering this alternative method to immediately reduce smoking risks without fearing the effects of cold turkey withdrawal.

What amazes me, is smokers are not switching over to this new near-smokeless technology in droves, and I'm not sure if people just don't understand the concept, or if people who smoke tobacco simply just do not care about their health to begin with.

If you must continue using tobacco in cigarettes, at least use the one that produces the least smoke. You will protect your health and your family's health from smoke yet still have time to consider quitting for good.

RelativityCadenza,

Thanks for your interest in promoting good health.

The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company makes many claims about its Eclipse cigarettes that are not supported, at least that is what a quick surf of the web reveals. The American Cancer Society, American Lung Association, and American Heart Association have voiced strong opposition to R.J. Reynolds' claims about the Eclipse cigarette. Studies of the Eclipse cigarette reveal a totally different perspective than what the tobacco company claims.

As someone who has encouraged people to switch to Eclipse, I have seen firsthand how it is used and there is indeed hardly any smoke that comes out of these cigarettes.

They are not ordinary cigarettes of course, they perform a process that is called vaporizing. Vaporizing in itself carries much less risk than traditional smoking.

The Eclipse cigarettes must be used the right way to obtain the benefits that naturally come with vaporizing. It must be lit much like a cigar at first, which does produce some smoke initially. Then once the carbon is lit, there is no side-stream smoke. It can more or less be dragged on like a normal cigarette, (it even looks like smoking a regular cigarette). Depending on how hard the user drags on it determines how hot the carbon gets and whether or not some smoke will be briefly visible.

If you've been in a room with a smoker, you know that just ONE old-fashioned cigarette can pretty much kill the air quality in a room. In a non-smoker's house (like mine), the smell will linger for at least a day.

But when they are smoking the Eclipse brand vaporizer cigarettes, there is absolutely no lingering smells or odors and absolutely no side-stream or second hand smoke.

I don't know why anyone would think THAT is a bad thing for people who have to be around tobacco users.

Tar, and carbon monoxide is created only when the tobacco is burned. Only if the user of an Eclipse cigarette takes deep drags off of it there will be briefly noticeable smoke, since deep drags make the carbon element get hot enough to actually make the tobacco burn slightly and may produce a small amount of smoke. It dissipates immediately.

That is the only catch with ECLIPSE cigarettes compared to old fashioned ones: It is not a true vaporizer, it DOES and CAN burn SOME of the tobacco, by RJ Reynolds' estimation, up to 3% if the user is taking normal drags. It is more of a HYBRID vaporizer-cigarette.

A true vaporizer would not produce any smoke, therefore, would not create any carbon monoxide or tar, would not produce any visible cloud, would not smell, and would not have any taste.

However when RJ Reynolds came up with a true smokeless vaporizer cigarette (the "Premier" in 1992), people complained because they could not smell taste or see anything coming out of it, therefore, it did not resemble a traditional cigarette at all.

But with the new Eclipse design, it is purposefully supposed to burn *some* of the tobacco so that it can have some flavor/taste.

I have noticed that people who have been 'smoking' Eclipse cigarettes exclusively for longer than a year have a REAL HARD TIME smoking an old-fashioned/traditional cigarette. They are not prepared for the amount of smoke that the old cigarettes like Camel or Marlboro produce and will often develop a cough or experience discomfort after having just one old fashioned cigarette.

The only time one has to be worried when switching to Eclipse from old fashioned cigarettes is if one already has some type of smoking-related disease. This is explained in the Eclipse brochure. It is not good to switch to Eclipse if one already has developed a smoking-related disease. The best time to switch is BEFORE that ever happens.

I'm sure there have been independant studies trying to say that Eclipse is a bad thing, but those who are doing those studies are already against tobacco to begin with, so their results are just as debatable without a third party who is unbiased. It may seem unfortunate, but, the tobacco companies have exclusive rights to do their own testing and release their own health claims. That's the law. The FDA is forbidden from interfering, and so is everyone else. So tobacco is a protected product in America. But come on. There WAS A TIME that tobacco was considered medicinal, and this was a long time ago.

There is no fooling anyone that tobacco's essential ingredient isn't a tried and true poison. Tobacco extracts have few barely recognizable medical uses, and the main purpose of tobacco extracts is to act as a main ingredient in poisons used to kill rodents and ants. Even though the very nature of Eclipse suggests it makes tobacco use many times "safer" in terms of reducing smoking-related irritants, the user is still inhaling the active ingredient nicotine, which in itself could be classified as a drug.

Though the Eclipse user might not be dealing with clouds of smoke, they are still getting nicotine. Perhaps much more than in a traditional cigarette because the nicotine doesn't get burned off into smoke and tar.

So now that the smoke and tar can be almost eliminated, how safe can ingesting nicotine be ?

I'm only suggesting switching to Eclipse to those who are addicted to cigarettes in the manner of which they need to go through the "action" of lighting a cigarette, holding it, taking drags, etc. Eclipse would be a great choice for anyone like that. I don't believe it is any more dangerous than a regular cigarette, and I KNOW I like Eclipse better because of the lack of billowing clouds of smoke.

Nicotine gum and nicotine-laced water is available for those people who want pure nicotine without having to deal with cigarettes, or inhaling. Nicotine gum and water are also another option for eliminating smoke. Big name pharmacies stock it near their smoking accessories and pipes. It's all there and available, the choices are up to the individual! If you're into using tobacco more than a couple times a week, you should educate yourself on every aspect of it. If you know it's hurting you, either switch to something safer or stop it.

There are also other types of smoking blends available if you look around, that do not use tobacco but herbs. They may contain mint leaves, damiana leaves, or so on. Again, they might have effects similar to tobacco, such as in giving a small buzz, and you don't get any addictive nicotine in tobacco-free smoking blends, but, the bottom line is smoking is always going to produce smoke, and inhaling smoke is what has been recognized as dangerous by the U.S. Surgeon General.

not quite true what you say above. the smoke causes the cancer and the COPD ( chronic obstructive pulmonary disease )

Nicotine is what causes the increase in heart attacks and strokes and DVTs by making the platelets sticky. It is also addicting and psychologically disempowering. Some of the other disorders linked to smoking are nicotine mediated rather than smoke/tar mediated as well. So do not be decieved. It is not as innocuous as you might think.

If smoke causes cancer and COPD, and obviously it does, then what I said above is true and in agreement.. I went to great lengths to be specific.

As I said above, nicotine could be considered a drug. Politically it isn't, but medically and in truth it is. The buzz is short lived compared to the depressive state one gets afterwards.

Exactly the point I made in my post above. If there is anything specific I posted that you feel is not exactly true, please quote it and point it out! I don't think I misled anyone.

RelativityCadenza,

Personally, I don't have any reason to trust what the tobacco companies say about their products. Their credibility is shot. They are biased by the green stuff ($). That is my opinion, but I am entitled to it.

If I had to pick between breathing the regular ole tobacco smoke and the Eclipse smoke, based on what you have said, I would pick the Eclipse smoke. But since those are not my only two options, I would choose neither. My understanding from the studies that I gleaned through about the Eclipse cigarette is that trading regular cigarettes for the Eclipses is just trading one cancer producing product for another. The studies seem to suggest that there is no real "safety" factor gained just from switching cigarettes. If there is a significant drop in the carcinogens produced by the Eclipse cigarette, then R.J. Reynolds should produce the evidence that shows this - - g.c. or mass-spec. chromatography is readily available to analyze the components of the smoke.

Carbon monoxide, a by-product of incomplete combustion, is a component of every fire. I seriously doubt that the Eclipse cigarette is so efficient that it acts like an incinerator and completely burns up the components of the smoke. Rather, I tend to think that the tobacco companies have done much research to try to promote a cigarette whose smell is not quite so offensive to those who are exposed to it. Combined with their claims of a "safer product," this leads to a false sense of security. The nicotine is still in the cigarette, and given its addictive qualities, the tobacco companies are ensuring their long-term profits by fueling their customers' cravings for nicotine.

Nicotine, a stimulant, by itself is bad news. It causes increased levels of epinephrine - - that cause the heart to beat faster and stronger - -and norepinephrine - - which causes the smooth muscles in the arteries to constrict. Nicotine also causes the platelets to be stickier than normal. This results in higher rates of cardiovascular disease among smokers and an increased risk of a heart attack or stroke. Throw in the two chemical asphixiants - - carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide - - which affect the body's ability to transfer oxygen to the cells, and you have added even more stress to the cardiovascular system.

Personally, I don't see anything gained by a smoker who changes from regular cigarettes to the Eclipse brand. The smoker needs to stop smoking. If they cannot stop "cold turkey," then they need to work with their doctor to find a product or treatment that will help them to gradually wean themselves off the nicotine.

There is one statement from a tobacco company that I have full confidence in. It can be found on the Philip Morris website. It is - - “There is no ‘safe’ cigarette.”

Evidently, we are not the only ones who feel this way about the tobacco companies . . .

"I did not assume the position of Surgeon General with the clear intention of being such an active opponent of tobacco, but after I studied the incontrovertible truths about the health hazards of smoking, and then became at first dumbfounded and then plainly furious at the tobacco industry for attempting to obfuscate and trivialize this extraordinarily important public health information, I couldn’t help but become an outspoken adversary.

How could the tobacco industry dare to dismiss as unfounded and unproven the absolutely clear connection between smoking and heart disease: between smoking and death from stroke; between smoking and cancer of the lung, the mouth, the esophagus, and the stomach; and between smoking and a dozen or more serious, debilitating, exhausting, expensive, and humiliating diseases?

How could it do that? The answer was – it just did. The tobacco industry is accountable to no one. It flaunts its ability to buy its way into the marketplace of ideas and pollute it with its false and deadly information.

Tobacco has been associated not only with disease and death, but also with money. That is why it has so long enjoyed special treatment. Tobacco was the cash crop that financed much of the American Revolution – those Virginia planters fetched a greater return for tobacco leaves that did the hardy New Englanders for their pumpkins. And Congress has been held hostage ever since."
