As you might imagine, C. Everett Koop drew quite a bit of opposition. Given the ability of the green stuff to influence the law-making process, there are still no governmental agencies or laws which protect the American consumer from these deadly tobacco products.
Yes, if it gets right down to it, it seems to be the people with most of the green stuff that get their way. You know, if directly contributing to the premature death of about one-half-a-million Americans doesn't bother your conscience, then why wouldn't such people use their money to block, hinder, or defeat the efforts of those who stand opposed to their products that do so much harm to people's health? I imagine most politicians are aware that opposing the tobacco companies would be like commiting political suicide. Therefore, the problem persists and Americans - - as well as the rest of the world - - pay the ultimate price to ensure the tobacco companies' profits.
Tobacco companies are made up of people - - people who exploit other people for their own financial gain. I believe the Bible describes this mindset as the "root of all kinds of evil" (1 Tim. 6:10). It distresses me to see so many fall victim to this dangerous product.
