Wow. I ran across two mammoths right after I ventured out into the wild for the first time. My brother is playing right now and he just got held up by a thief. I've never been robbed like that, but I have had a couple assassins come after me!

Dragonrend! That's it. It doesn't work too well from what I'm seeing. Once you hit them with Dragonrend, they take their sweet time landing. And they can sometimes take off while still being affected. It does help tho.

I noticed this as well but it does help a lot. You just got to try and keep doing it once they have landed. As of now, I'm trying to get up my destruction a lot as I see it being more helpful than anything. My archery is only 38 as well so I really need to try and get that up. Whats a good thing to train on for archery anyways? I like giant's but not too sure where more are located.

I'm level 26 now on my main character and I still have no idea how to start alchemy. I just think it's difficult to get my head around what type of ingredient's work together. Then once I do, going out and actually getting them would be the hard part.
I'll give you a good tip to get started with Alchemy. If you have enough money, go to the Alchemy shop in Whiterun. I say Whiterun since it's my home base. Anyways, buy all her ingredients. It will cost less than 2000 I think. Then use that web app I posted above and it will tell you exactly what ingredients to combine (just check what ingredients you have and it will calculate for you based on what you have in your inventory...very sweet app and easy to use) to make some really valuable potions. You will more than make your money back on the first go! One really valuable potion is made from Giant's Toe and Wheat. The base value for that one is 800 something! Of course you'll get around 500...but still.

One thing, when you make that many potions she won't have enough money to buy them all. So go next door and Belathor will buy them too. And he will run out of money too! So. Stand outside their shops and wait 48 hours and they (and any other vendors you might have just dealt with) will have not only restocked their cash drawers, but their inventories as well.
That works...I do it constantly.

I noticed this as well but it does help a lot. You just got to try and keep doing it once they have landed. As of now, I'm trying to get up my destruction a lot as I see it being more helpful than anything. My archery is only 38 as well so I really need to try and get that up. If you join the Thief's Guild in Riften, there's an archery trainer there. One trick I read about but haven't tried is to shoot your companion (if you have one...I'll recommend a good one in a second) in the back but don't kill them. They will regenerate health pretty quick, so you can keep shooting them. Another note on companions. In combat, then can get submitted but not killed. Only YOU can kill your companion! So if you're in a tough fight, as long as you yourself don't deal the killing blow your companion will live.
Oh, a note on archery. I like using low damage arrows. That way it takes more shots to kill one target, thus giving you more skill. Save your good arrows for dragons!

A good companion is Jenassa. She's a theif/assassin type character and likes to use a bow. She should be in The Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun. I used Lydia for a while, but she *kept* getting in my way and I kept killing her. And the mage I was using was stealing all my kills!!
^_^

I hope this is helpful Young Grasshopper.

Ya know, I've heard that before about only you can kill your companions, but I was nowhere near Lydia when she dropped dead during a rescue mission. But other than that, all my companions (when I actually use one; I usually travel solo because I'm a thief/assassin) have lived. Then again, I also have the spell called Healing Hands which heals other people (veeery useful when your companion falls and you can't wait until the end of the fight for them to heal because you can't finish it on your own).

Another good one to help raise your skills on is Shadowmere, the horse you get during the Dark Brotherhood quests. He has an insane amount of health that regenerates very quickly. I wouldn't recommend it on the horses you can buy from the stables... they're not quite as sturdy :p

So, beating a live horse? That's a new one!
^_^

I'll have to try that. I'll be starting the Dark Brotherhood sometime in the not-too-distant future. Right now I'm doing the Dibella quest so I can talk to this priest chick and get Enchantment training. After that, finish the Imperial missions. I'm looking for Master Alchemy training with the Brotherhood.

You should find a character named Angi. You get a few free levels of archery by training with her. She's somewhere near Falkreath, hiding in a cabin in the mountains.

LOL it's just what I've heard, I haven't tried it yet... I'm scared he might turn on me or something :p I've become quite attached to him and will never have another horse.

I have done the alchemy training on occasion... the trainer is one of my favorite characters in Skyrim.

Do you know if that's just low-level training? My bow skill is in the 90s. I don't want to look for her if she can't help me. I'll be sure to tho when I do another character.

Cool. Can't wait to meet them. I wish I could keep training Archery with the guy in the first village. I was meaning to pick him up as a companion actually! Ah, so many things to remember about in Skyrim...so little time!

FYI on Dark Brotherhood, some of the early missions will potentially cause a bug making it impossible to complete a few missions including some Companions ones.

I'm pretty sure that no matter what level you're at, she will help you obtain the four or five levels you normally get from her, unless of course you're at 100 archery.

She isn't like a normal trainer where you pay her and you magically gain a level. For one, its free. For two, she actually makes you shoot at targets and such, and after every successful test, you gain a level.

I stumbled across her accidentally one day, and it was a pretty cool experience, which is why I have a whole chapter of Homecoming dedicated to that discovery.

Once you hit 90, you're on your own... you can't train with people anymore.
That stinks.

Thanks for the warning. I've run into a few bugs already in other areas. So far, I've been able to reload, patch and work-around them pretty well.

It's things like that that make Skyrim a truly great game.

Chapter Seven of Homecoming is finally done, and it can be found in my blog. We're right at the very end of Bleak Falls Barrow. If anyone's interested, go to my CF Blog: Christian Forums - Homecoming: A Nord's Tale and read away. All seven chapters are there for you to enjoy, and I'm currently working on the next one, which will finally conclude his quest with the golden claw.

Keep in mind that the chapter is broken into two separate entries, because it was a little long for the blog. Make sure you read the entry below the one that says (continued) first, or you'll be lost.

I got this for Christmas and I'm really liking it so far. I'm still fairly early on in it so most things I meet kill me very easily, I wandered too close to a mammoth and it started chasing after me and killed me with one kick :-(.

LoL... I still haven't played it yet. My friend let me borrow his copy while he was busy for a couple of months, and I just bought my own copy of it so I can give his back, but I still have yet to play it.

I'm in the process of installing mods for it now and will probably end up adding more mods once the creation kit comes out and people add even more mods for the game...lol.

If you ever want to start Alchemy, here's your Bible!
Alchemy Immersion.

I found that a little while ago. VERY helpful! Very fine and well-designed web app.
I just made a ton of potions and I'm dashing off to sell them. One to make is Giant's Toe and Wheat. Has 800 something value!! And easy ingredients to find. Just kill a giant and harvest some wheat!

I had a horse. HAD! It was so annoying having to jump off to fight every few seconds, so I tossed him down a mountain.
^_^

That's a cool app, thanks for sharing!

My first encounter with mammoths went pretty much the same way.

Aside from a mod for the menu system, I don't see why you'd need one. The game has more content as is than I could even deal with.

You're welcome! It's a huge time saver.

Most of the mods I install are cosmetic mods, such as turning the dog companions into a Husky, or making the snow look better, or the water or more realistic sounds for fire and water or even changing the UI to something a bit more PC friendly. I also like to add weapons from outside of Skyrim, such as better looking Elven swords or (I wish someone would add this one already) Hadhafang from the LotR movies or Legolas's daggers.

Once the creation kit comes out there should also be better companion mods coming out.

I do look necessarily for more things to do, just ways to make the game look and feel a little better.
