  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Although it may be difficult to find movies where actual priests are shown in a positive way, many movies show the priest-type of character positively. Ones that come immediately to mind are the Elves in Lord of the Rings, or the Jedi in Star Wars. Both are the spiritual leaders of the world they inhabit, both are selfless characters who give up their own needs for others, and both are concerned with doing what is right, not what is popular. Just a thought.

As for the priests in Sin City, although I am not a big fan of showing priests negatively, I do feel it was necessary to show the extent of sin in their world.

First of all I can think of several movies with a priest as the protagonist. Usually horror movies and such.

Second of all, Sin City was incredible but disturbing. The violence actually bothered me. Castration, mutilation, dismemberment, decapitation, bullet wounds, references to child rape are all part of it. If some of this bothers you DON'T see it. It was still a great movie.

EDIT: And Jessica Alba may be a horrible actress, but gosh darn she is hot.

IN this day in age, you rarely see this kind of violence and nudity in movies nowadays, so great timing on them cause I wasn't really expecting that much. Not to say it's bad, just unexpected.

Great movie though. A true piece of art. Beautiful.

The violence was certainly disturbing. The part that I found the MOST disturbing was the look of serenity on Elijah Wood's face....even during the part when....well...you know....

Then they did it what they intended; they disturbed you. Kevin wasn't ment to be smiled back at.

Kevin (Elijah Woods) was a sick puppy. It was a pretty graphic movie. It was great all the same.
The priest was played by the great Frank Miller. He is the creator of 'Sin City'.

Well, those characters are from an extremely literal adaptation of the first Sin City comic (now called The Hard Goodbye), written and drawn entirely by Frank Miller - so blame him if you want to blame someone. You're really missing the point though, it was a reflection of how everyone is corrupt in Sin City. It's extremely over-the-top type levels of corruption. You can't expect a group as influential as the clergy to be good in a place like that.

That said, I enjoyed the film. It was quite interesting as an art experience, and I still loved Marv (best character in the film, just as in the comics).

Personally though, I feel it would have made a better film if it had been a less literal adaptation. It had "comic book" style scene transitions - as in, suddenly something is happening in another scene with practically no transition. I find the style jarring in comics as well, but in comics, you can pause for a few seconds to look over the art and reread the dialogue to get a better hang on what is going on.

All told though, I would rate the film an 8/10

Solid movie. I liked it, and was left laughing for quite some time after some of the parts (definately fit into the "things you shouldn't have laughed at but did" thread too). I loved Marv, great character. I was also a fan of the simple over-the-top-ness of the action, definately made you remember that it was a comic movie.
