you explain to me what that is...and maybe I'll have some...

Pfeffernüße is a traditional german cookie. The name means "pepper nut" 'cause they're so small and spicy... think kind of gingerbread lite. They're very moist, which is weird 'cause after you make the dough and use the cookie cutter to punch out all the cookies, you let them sit out in the open for a week before baking them. Anyway, they're super yummy! Chris' family makes a HUGE batch of them every Christmas; it's pretty much the only time they all get together (extended family too) and everyone takes a turn with every job. It's a really neat tradition and I was lucky enough to participate a couple of years ago right after we got engaged. Last year other stuff interfered, though (Chris was able to go) and this year here we are living 1000 miles away from them.

As a side note, we're flying to Vancouver tomorrow to spend Christmas with my family. We invited Chris' folks to come up for dinner on Christmas day but unfortunately they aren't able to make it so it seems unlikely Chris will get to see his parents for at least another year :( due to prior commitments for most of our vacation time next year. I actually think the main reason his parents aren't coming is 'cause they're semi-evangelistic atheists and they're uncomfortable around my (mostly) Christian family.

Anyway, please pray for a safe journey for both of us and have a very Merry Christmas!

Hmm....wonder what the difference is with this recipe. They say let sit 2 weeks AFTER making cookies. I remember mom making these when I was young but don't remember how she made them except they were delicious.

Pfeffernusse Cookies Recipe

Ingredients
2 cups sifted flour
3/4 tsp ground cardamom
3/4 tsp double-acting baking powder
3/4 tsp ground allspice
3/4 tsp salt
3/4 tsp mace
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp finely ground white pepper
1/4 tsp ground anise seeds
1 cup honey
3 Tbsp shortening
1 egg
Confectioner's sugar

Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Sift together the dry ingredients. Heat the honey but do not boil. Add the shortening, then cool. Beat in the egg, then stir in dry ingredients just until blended. Let the dough rest for about 10 minutes to allow it to stiffen.

Shape dough into 1-1/2-inch balls. Place the balls onto a greased cookie sheet (you may flatten them slightly if you wish). Bake for 12 to 13 minutes.

Cool the cookies well. Place the cookies in an airtight bowl, cover tightly, and allow to ripen for about 2 weeks. Dust with confectioner's sugar before serving. Yield: 3 dozen

I've been sick, started running a fever on Wednesday. Blech. Now I'm just exhausted. I hope I have the energy to clean my house and do some cooking/ baking tomorrow. I'm glad that I got five days off in a row.

Hmmm.... I wonder if I can get a nap in before bedtime?

Did everyone have a joyous Chistmas?

I think I did. I got to go to the late Christmas Eve service with my friend. (10:00pm it started). I think the best part of the service was when all the lights were turned out and we sang "Silent Night" by candlelight. So beautiful.

What was the best gift you got this year?

For me, it was a new cell phone complete with Internet, text messaging, and IM. :) It was also a camera phone. :)

They are still playing Christmas music where you are? Wow. Most of the stations here stop the day after Christmas.

I completly agree with you though. I can't STAND "Santa Baby." I can't take that woman's voice. It's even worse when they play it when you are getting "worked on" in the dental office. (I went to the dentist the day before Christmas Eve and they were playing it on the radio.)

My guess is that you have been hearing the Eartha Kitt version of the song. Madonna did a version back in the 90s but is not played as much as the Eartha Kitt one. Y'all remember Eartha Kitt. The original Catwoman on the Batman TV series. She was replaced by Julie Newmar. However, in the Pilot 2 hour movie Lee Merriwether played the part.

Yep, I had a good Christmas! I went to the 5pm and the 11pm Christmas eve services at Good Shepherd Episcopal (yeah, they're still working on our church building, so we didn't have Christmas eve services of our own). They did dim the lights, but I missed the traditional candlelight service we do where everybody gets a candle. They used incense at the 11pm service and the symbolism was nice, but the stuff STANK and it burned my sister's eyes.

We had a good time at home, too.

Gifts I got - candy (of course), some red socks (red, eh, but socks are good), two CDs by a group called Il Divo (I didn't remember them, but I like the CDs. I must've seen them/heard them somewhere as I had them in my mom's amazon cart or wishlist or something like that), some VeggieTales tapes (well, actually a VeggieTales, a 3-2-1 Penguins, and a Cookie Monster video). . .
