Sorry for all the posts. I don't really study psychology, and I love this section of the forum.

Besides being rich (or some other worldly thing), is being assertive the best way to gain respect?

Should we be assertive? Why or why not?

Being assertive towards any end goal, really is driven by each person's individual psyche and psychological need. Some people are assertive towards gaining wealth, some are assertive towards wanting to be liked, etc. etc..

What gains the respect of others, depends on other people's values and how they view you.

Better than aggressive, though there are those who seem to be attracted to aggressive people.
Better than passivity, which is a non response and generally does not inspire respect.

It does sort of depend on how you define assertive. If you mean confidence and forthrightness, than it is generally the way to go. But confidence has to be supported with knowledge and asserting a position that is false should bring disrespect. You should also be forthright about lack of knowledge on a topic.
