The New Moon starts the New month, it is the month of Elul

Rosh Chodesh Elul begins at sundown on Mon, 21 August 2017.

But if the moon is already new then it seems it is a bit behind.

As a young man in the 60's we were told by scientists that the world was about to start a major freeze, and the Thames would become solid ice as it had been in the 19c; people were warned to buy extra blankets and warm clothing, so we did. It was, they said, a major freeze that wiped out all dinosaurs, and the weather pattern, following the last WW, was that it was getting much, much colder. Christians were convinced that it was the end times because of all the cold weather and, of course, the Cold War. The world, they thought, would either freeze or be blown to bits by a nuclear war - USA vs Russia. Few expected, then, that the world would be here in the new millennium.

As 1999 got closer to its end, scientists were telling us that after midnight on 31.12.99, it may be that planes could fall out of the sky, and almost everything that was computer driven would crash - so many Christians claimed it as the end of the world. The world woke up on 01.01.00 and, by and large, just carried on.

Oh, and the JW's were also convinced with their (amended, again) date of the End Times, as were the Mormons, as I recall, something about gold plates and a hill near New York being levelled?

We are still here, so please forgive our caution! It is not about snubbing G_d, it is quite the reverse, it is waiting for the clear Biblical signs that must first come about. A natural alignment of earth / sun / moon may well be A sign, but to claim it as THE definitive sign is very different. Great caution is needed when second guessing G_d!

What Jewish community uses Hebcal? It is not authoritative.

Even so, it shows that the eclipse is NOT on Elul 1, but the last day of Av.

Even though they have been happening for millennia crossing across the US is a rarity and never before have so many people been able to see it, even those not in the US, through Youtube, Satellite TV, Cell phones, tablets, all around the world.

It is incredible when you think of it that this is one of the inarguable signs of our Creator G-d.

As he told us in Genesis that he made the Sun and the moon for signs.

And to do that He made the moon and set it at just the right distance so that when these total eclipses occur it just covers the sun enough but so that it isn't totally obliterated but the corona can be seen lighting up the edges of the moon shadow so we don't think the sun has totally disappeared.

Interesting, corona means, 'CROWN'.

When it goes into totality and when it comes out of the totality the first rays are called the Diamond Ring.

Just saw the eclipse and it was outer world. There was a white glow like a wielders rod burning. It took a long time to take place, and the total eclipse only lasted about two minutes. As for the stars, I only saw Venus.

I'm watching G-III Aircraft team from NASA that it talking about seeing it from the air and how it looked on the ground too. Watching the shadow cross the earth he said was amazing.

I've never thought about that before, we think of standing still and looking up but not how it looks from above.

The shadow doesn't move - the earth moves, that is why it can be seen in different states, as the earth revolves.

Sorry, my "commentary" was about the eclipse, and not your discussions. Although I was in the direct totality path, it was kind of a non-event:
