  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't think so. But if alcohol were illegal, they would have to find an acceptable substitute for wine such as juice.
Not really. During Prohibition, churches that used alcoholic wine for communion were granted an exemption. (separation of church and state)

That was argued successfully in court in the 1960s for the American Mind Expansionist Church to be allowed to use LSD as part of their liturgy; based on the Catholic church during prohibition.

I already know that making alcohol illegal will create an underground black market for alcoholic beverages. That’s what happened during Prohibition. But still, doesn’t it make alcohol more difficult to get?
Nope. The people who would go to the black market and still get it just as easily and regularly are the same people who have problems and cause problems due to alcohol. Same effect, only a new criminal empires would be created. The only thing you succeed at is keeping normal people from consuming responsibly. So congrats. You've created crime and violence so Mary Jane next door can't have wine with her supper.

And on top of it you trample on the religious freedom of Orthodox, Catholics, Lutherans, Anglicans, etc. For us and for them, juice is absolutely 100 percent not an acceptable substitute.

Serious question: should alcohol be illegal? As someone who used to have a terrible—and indeed dangerous—alcoholism problem, I would say yes. I used to drink and drink and drink, and I would never stop. There would even be times when I would go on multi-day drinking binges and consume 20 drinks a day for three or four days until taking a break. I had a horrific problem with alcohol, as do so many people today, and it needs to be illegal.

The Prohibition days seemed like some sort of throw-back puritanical code from a bygone era. The truth, though, is that Prohibition advocates were right despite their unpopularity. Why? Well, just go to a Google news search and type in “drunk driver fatality,” and you will see an abundance of reports where a drunk driver killed a pedestrian or other driver because of his drinking. None of these accidents would have taken place had alcohol been illegal.

My anti-alcohol views do not stem from my religion. Even Jesus drank wine during the Last Supper. But it’s not like they had cars back then.
More people die from the complications of obesity than from alcohol.

Would you make food illegal, too?

True -but I understand you could still be fined 10 shekels for RDUI (Riding a Donkey Under the Influence). :(

We tried Prohibition, and it was a disaster. It created a black market and made people criminals, and ultimately was unenforceable because it lost public support. And the fundamental reason it failed, IMO, it that it went "beyond what is written". God's laws are good for people. But God never proscribed alcohol, only its abuse. Therefore we should not outlaw it, we should regulate it, as we do.

Alcohol is the vehicle that drives an alcoholic's addiction. But there are a multitude of other vehicles of addiction. Food, exercise, pornography, sex, gambling, meth, prescription pain medication; some are addicted to pain itself, getting a rush of endorphins from self-abuse. Prohibiting one vehicle is likely to just cause drivers susceptible to addiction to transfer to another. Yes, it's reasonable to make and enforce sensible rules and regulations, just as we do with driving, but making a vehicle of addiction illegal would not repair the driver's problem with addiction. Also, the more something is forbidden, the more alluring and tempting it can become, hence the reason why forbidden fruit is often described as the sweetest.

I don’t think it should be illegal
I used to drink a fair bit too and always drank to get drunk but not everyone thinks that way I know people who can have two or three drinks and call it a day, they can even choose to have one drink and stop, I struggle to just have two or three like them to me it’s only the start it’s not even a taste
But they and so many others don’t drink to get drunk
Drink Driving is bad but again for me another reason why we shouldn’t ban it is because more people are likely to kill someone talking on their phones than drink driving in fact this was so much of a concern in the UK they did an advertisement where a drunk man was in the passenger seat and a woman was on the phone they swapped seats because they’re was less chance of an accident not because a drunk Driver is more careful it just happens a lot less
Drinking can be terrible if it wasn’t for Jesus I would be dead from drink and other things. Nothing has made me more selfish than drink, it can be terrible when it’s abused but it’s about the mindset of the individual
Food is abused terribly and people die from being overweight, should food be illegal,my fear is once we start banning things that hurt ourselves where will we stop don’t get me wrong I hear your heart but I think it’s ok for some and not for others.
My opinion is No but I’m sure they’re will be plenty of others that will agree with you
God bless you

Making things 'illegal' just because some people have a problem with it never seems to work. And since alcohol is so incredibly easy to make it would never help those addicted to it anyway.

If you really want to make something illegal that is harmful to others, try tobacco. It is a long and difficult process to make usable tobacco products and maybe people wouldn't go to the effort to make their own. If nothing else, making it illegal would at least keep the capitalists from trying to addict our children.

The problem is that a lot of people can’t drink alcohol responsibility. I know I can’t. If I drink one drink, I always want another, then another, and another. I don’t stop until I’m too tired to drink anymore. Then I just wait until the tiredness subsides, then begin drinking again. My problem is horrible, and so many others—in fact, I would say millions of others—have this same problem.
So because you and some others can't control themselves, you want to ban it for everyone that can?

Does that go for everything else that some can't control but others can, or only the things you can't control?

Disagree, and I mean no offense when I say, it's not all about those that can't handle it...it's about everyone.

The Eucharist can be celebrated with juice in lieu of wine.

Where's the fun in that? :)

There is some (though sketchy) evidence that moderate alcohol intake (for women, not over 1.5 oz. of 80 proof liquor daily. For men, not over 3 oz.) may have health benefits. It may lower the risk of dying from heart disease, lower the risk of ischemic stroke, and lower the chances of developing Type 2 diabetes. Though all of these benefits can be provided by other lifestyle interventions.

Personally, I very much enjoy a drink before dinner. It's a mark of civilized living. Usually a Manhattan (the classic is made with rye whiskey, but bourbon is also good.) Or a very dry, icy cold gin Martini. I like Bombay Sapphire and Tanqueray. Which to me, rank right up there with Shakespeare, the Theory of Evolution, and penicillin as Britain's greatest gifts to civilization.

If you live in America for example some states do restrict Alcohol much more than say UK where I live
When I was in US in one of the states you would be pulled over if you had an unopened beer in the trunk that would never happen in the UK and we can drink at 18 or 14 in a pub with adults but only have so much, it doesn’t make it good it just means different places are different

Let's see? relax with a couple of drinks after work, or a jog around the block?...I just don't know. I don't drink, just don't like it anymore but some things are just obvious.

Also, from a Christians standpoint, there is so much we aren't allowed to do, if one chooses to drink I say go for it, by all means.
