It's a breaking news story, and the facts of it are still being established. This is what is known thus far:

Multiple people were injured in a shooting Monday morning at an elementary school in San Bernardino in what officials are describing as a murder-suicide.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said four victims were being treated and a suspect was possibly down as well. No other details were immediately available.

We believe this to be a murder suicide,” he tweeted. “Happened in a class room. Two students have been transported to the hospital.”

The gunfire occurred just after 10:30 a.m. at North Park School, 5378 N. H Street.

On the news they're saying that children have been airlifted to a hospital. :(

Update: It's been reported that two students were shot, and a teacher killed by the gunman who then killed himself.

Obviously the most important question, were there any Muslims and/or refugees involved?

This is indeed crucial, if this is just some standard american on american crime, then there really is no story here. Now if there are muslims involved that changes everything. A life lost at the hands of a muslim is an international act of terrorism, if its just americans being americans thats different.

I understand the point you're trying to make here...however, it's something that involved a gun in a school, which means that the story will get all of the same attention from all of the same people...

So even if it's not a "Muslim" conversation, it'll still end up being a "gun control" conversation...it'll be a polarizing topic for many folks no matter what the circumstances are.

Many republicans would blame the religion, many democrats would blame the weapon...in either case, it'll be used as a rebuttal tool for many folks on both sides to play the angle of "anyone who disagrees with me on this political issue is complicit in this tragedy"

Whether or not Muslims are involved is not what matters at this point. I would think the OP was posted so we would pray for the children that were injured.

I'd have thought it would be a fairly obvious proof of the need for sensible gun reform, but I thought that 50 or 60 mass shootings ago, so I'm not even going to try that one. But if you want to make that blindingly obvious argument, please don't let my ennui stop you.

@Stanfordella is one of the more capable and intelligent regulars here. I'm sure if soliciting prayer was her intention, she knows where the prayer wall forum is. This is for discussion of news and current events.

On the aerial footage from the helicopter over the elementary school it shows the children all lined up outside being organized by the police and teachers to be taken to a local high school and university where their parents can pick them up. It made me smile to see some of the kids playing with each other. Hopefully the ones who weren't in the classroom are blissfully oblivious about what's happened. The parents being interviewed, on the other hand, are palpably filled with anxiety. The police believe the active threat is over because the shooter killed himself, but are still taking precautions.

My personal preference is that we go the Czech Republic route and focus more on the licensing aspect instead of the "what kinds of guns" angle...however, I tend to make enemies on both sides when I verbalize that... My stance is, if a person is well-qualified and mentally stable, I don't care what kinds of guns (or how many) they have...however, restricting an unstable person to a 10 round glock instead of a 30 round AR wouldn't be my definition of "comforting"

My point was simply that in cases like this, people on both sides will exploit situations to "prove a point"...and that point is always "if everyone just agreed to do things my way, this wouldn't be a problem"...that's why you get the "if a good guy with a gun..." and "if they would just ban guns..." arguments coming out of the two sides of the spectrum.

"Cheap" because I'm voicing the first thing everyone thought when the read about another shooting? Do tell, what's the appropriate time to wait before commenting? And if there's another shooting in the meantime, do we have to start the clock over?

I wouldn't call it a cheap shot on their parts...this isn't the "show only solemn respect" section of the forums, it's "discussion and debate" so I don't think it's unreasonable to have "discussion and debate" over "News & Current Events".

I appreciate you volunteering to speak for everyone, but I can manage without representation.
Pretty sure you don't know my thoughts. If you do, please vacate my head. Thanks.
