Shell Necklaces - Help!

My friend is bringing me back some shells from his trip. I would really like to make a necklace or bracelet out of those shells. My questions are as follows: How do I make a hole in each of those shells so I can string them? Also, how do I smooth the edges of those shells so they don't cut my skin? Please help. I already tried looking up the answers on the Internet but I found nothing.

I have not done this since my late teens but we used to do hermit crab shells and use a small 1/16 in drill bit.

You posted this a long time ago, so I'm not sure if you still need help or not. But I have used a drimmel (i think that's how it's spelled) tool to make small holes in shells. The shells obviously have to be strong enough, but most of the time it works!
