In evolution theory you ask I believe that the fossil record shows separate species - when all life propagates by breed mating with breed producing new breeds (variation) within the species. I hate to break this this to you, but those are not really unicorns. The author is using 'artistic license' - like when Superman, travelling 'faster than a speeding bullet', bursts through a brick wall to save a bunch of people but no one is injured by the resulting shrapnel.
