The Faith of the Canaanite Woman.

Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out. "Lord, Son of David," have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.

Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us."

He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel."

The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said.
He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."

"Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."

Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith!" Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. (Matt 15:22-28) (NIV)

This story of Jesus and the Canaanite Women speaks to us on many levels. Jesus actually seems rude to this woman as she cries out after him and the disciples. She is making a nuisance of herself. We must keep in mind that Canaanites had been the enemies of Israel...and were not considered part of Jewish culture or beliefs. Yet, Jesus is moved upon by her persistance and grants her request.

He is moved by her "great faith.".

No matter what our background, no matter what sins of unbelief we have committed in our past, no matter what our environment, job, nationality, or position in society---when we come to Jesus in faith, humility, and trust...we are granted access, we are included, we are granted our request. The key is "faith."
