Just wondering what people think about Shania Twain, do you enjoy her music?

I have been listening to 'Come on Over' apparently the most popular country album up to that date although released in the late 90s I think.

I have her biography which I'm meaning to read. I have been into country music lately. I don't know if she's classified as proper country but she recorded in nashville so I think of her as country.

What is it you don't like about country music?
I know some of it is hokey, but I think Dolly Parton is brilliant. Alan Jackson also isn't too bad. When they are singing about God, even better.

I don't know, I quite enjoy Shania Twain. Not everything on that album, but some songs stand out.

Probably more the accent than anything. It is just "hick."

In the 60s and 70s (with a few exceptions) the musicianship in C&W was really poor.

Now OTOH - I love bluegrass - especially when it is instrumental. I can take the vocals in very small doses. And most 50s and 60s country rock (like rockabilly) I like.

But current country (which sans vocals is not THAT different than the pop charts) creeps me out in their accents.

oh ok.
Yes the country twang.
Some of it is noticeable and can be annoying. But I don't think Shania has that, well maybe just a little. lol.

Just reading her memoir, she grew up in Canada, in poverty, and spent a lot of the time in the backwoods planting trees so I guess that might qualify her as country. But its weird as Olivia Newton John is sometimes classified as country and she's from England. (then moved to Australia).

She was kind of cross-over for a while (country and pop) but she landed firmly in country. Ringo had a brief go at country himself.

Tell me how these are NOT country:

not sure what the criteria has to be for country music.
I recall reading the ONJ won a country music award and some other artists got miffed as she wasn't actually from the countryside.
Yeah - I heard about that. But people have been coming into country music from places other than the states that made up the civil war confederacy since about 1970. Sometimes the good old boys don't like someone else stealing their thunder.

That is kind of like Bill Halley or Elvis getting mad that England had some rock and roll musicians too.

Shania's music isn't really that country even though she's produced by Nashville.
She's got ballads and dance and a bit of rock thrown in and some is pure pop.

So, I'm not sure the label really fits and also her accent isn't really 'hick' even though she grew up in the backwoods of Canada as it was. Aside from that, I like her as she's got a sense of humour about her songs.

Can't say she's a christian but I think she'd be more of a seeker and aware that there is a God. She's been through some tough times and survived. her son is named Eja which is Hebrew for 'the Lord has given' or something like that. (don't quote me, its in her memoir).

One thing I read in her memoir that touched me is that she got the compliment that her voice was compared to Karen Carpenters. So she thought that was pretty amazing and I think her voice has something special to it. (although, Karen cannot truly compare with anyone else).
