Cardinal Dolan needs to do a very public cleansing and reconsecrating of the cathedral IMO. It sends an appropriate message to the trans community and the perps in particular, and would go a long way to signal to Catholics that he as the ordinary of the NYC Archdiocese is taking this deadly serious; that the resonance of that filth won't be felt there anymore. Just like the church in Brooklyn should have been, and hopefully was, and just like the church in New Orleans where the priest had sex on the altar was.

I think the LGBTQWERTY crowd would riot inside and outside the cathedral, probably with incendiary devices and sledgehammers, if he did that publicly. Maybe, just maybe, a public reconsecration of the site being interrupted by raving wrecker arsonists who burn the building down would knock a tiny bit of sense into people. Or maybe it would be our Kristalnacht. Hard to know.

No prayer is wasted. If he damned himself then it will apply to someone else in need of those prayers.

Dolan did not use his homily at the Saturday evening vigil Mass in New Rochelle to comment on the scandal that had taken place in his own cathedral some days earlier and since then has not made any public comment on the matter.

Dougherty officiated the funeral service on February 15. As can be heard on the video of the event, he was told before the service that the originally planned funeral Mass had to be turned into a funeral service. “Funeral service, no Mass,” a clergyman told Dougherty, to which he replied, “OK, OK.” He obviously did not make that decision. He continuously spoke of the trans activist Cecilia Gentili (born a man) as “she” and indicated that Gentili was on the way to heaven. At the beginning of the service, he praised the attendees – hundreds of whom were transgender persons – by stating, “Except on Easter Sunday, we don’t really have a crowd that is so well turned out.” The congregation burst out in prolonged uproarious hoots and yells in response to the priest, who is then laughing.

He also tolerated the innumerable blasphemies and mockeries of the Catholic faith throughout the service, during which the Mother of God was mocked (replacing the words “Ave Maria” with the chant “Ave Cecilia,” as if Gentili was a saint and comparable to Our Lady). With the priest sitting nearby, one homosexual couple exchanged a kiss on the altar. When the “husband” of Gentili called the deceased an “angel,” Dougherty clapped his hands in approval. Another speaker called Gentili “our saint” who worked so that “sex workers are free.”

The New York archbishop said that Fr. Edward Dougherty 'is a hero' because 'he stopped the (funeral) Mass,' but when questioned that in reality the service was not stopped, Dolan said, 'Then it went on without him,' and he turned around and walked away.

(OSV News) — Five days after mourners filled the iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York for an irreverent “homecoming” funeral for actor and author Cecilia Gentili, New York Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan said he believes the “cathedral acted extraordinarily well.”

In a recording released Feb. 20 of the SIRIUS XM radio show “Conversation with Cardinal Dolan,” the cardinal praised the priests at St. Patrick’s for making a quick decision “that with behavior like this we can’t do a Mass. We’ll do Liturgy of the Word — the readings — and the sermon and prayers of petition and the Our Father.” The service “got worse with the eulogies that were very irreverent and disrespectful,” he added.

The LGBTQ group that arranged the funeral said Feb. 20 it wants “accountability” from the cathedral for shortening the service from a full Mass to a shorter liturgy without the Eucharist.

“A public apology will also be requested from the Archdiocese of New York for the painfully dismissive and exclusionary language used in their recent statement,” said GLITS Inc. (Gays and Lesbians Living in a Transgender Society) in a news release announcing it will hold a news conference with political and religious leaders and community members about the matter at City Hall Feb. 21.


In its Feb. 20 news release, GLITS said the “rash decision made by clergy members” at the cathedral “abruptly cut short … this joyful and celebratory commemoration of (Gentili’s) powerful legacy.” The service “ended an hour earlier than had been scheduled, thus denying her the full funeral Mass that was agreed upon,” it said.

The community Gentili served “requests a public apology to heal from the pain,” it said, and added that the rector “alluding to the presence of trans and the LGTBQ+ community at large as ‘forces of sin and darkness'” in his statement “is incendiary rhetoric that contributes to further discrimination against LGBTQ+ communities.”

The release cited Pope Francis’ call “for a more open and inclusive church,” adding, “We hope that LGBTQ+ parishioners and mourners won’t be left to feel abandoned yet again by the faith that they still want to call home.”

But Gentili was a self-professed atheist who had been “reexamining (a) relationship with religion for a long time,” according to a November 2023 interview. Gentili had come “from a family of so many different faiths,” including Catholicism, that the activist didn’t feel “attached to any of them.”

Taking it to City Hall makes this a Church vs State issue. They undoubtedly have sufficient allies in City Hall to make this escalation.

The plug should have been pulled on this sacrilege even if they would have rioted and vandalized and burned the building down. Granted the police would have done nothing, the priests should have turned the microphones and lights out and left these people to their depravity. Sure the destruction would have been almost as significant as the fire at Notre Dame. But it would have marked for Catholics that the LGBTQ horde really are at war with God.

The community Gentility represents has long been at war with God. They are merely upping the level of conflict. They will continue to up the level of conflict. There is no scenario of peace and getting along.

Maybe pope Francis will decide to weigh in and give them all a blessing. I’m scared to think that is a possibility.
