Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

My school just started a secular student alliance chapter, and I know someone who went today and thought it was the best thing ever. I don't know what to say about it exactly except that it just deeply saddens me that these students are putting so much enthusiasm into turning away from religion and trying to convince other students to do the same

Hmm, never heard of that organisation before.

Your friend probably enjoyed the meeting because it's nice when we find people whose views match our own. You probably like going to Christian groups because you meet people who share your faith and talk about things you consider true; your friend is the same. Instead of trying to persuade your friend not to go, maybe arrange a swap, where she visits your meetings once and you go to one with her. Keep an open exchange of dialogue going. Ask her to talk about what draws her to that group or how she got her opinions, and continue sharing your beliefs with her too, in a friendly way. Even if you don't end up changing her mind, you'll encourage her to bring the message of a positive Christian friend to group with her, and maybe that's something the other people attending haven't experienced before.

There is one at my school because there are 2 christian clubs. Once christian club is your generic boring club and the other is one of those over the top recruiter type christian club. So the atheists fought back with an athiest club. I can understand why they did that. People that are in your face about faith really just push people away.

He means that he's wondering how you get through school not appreciating that there are other beliefs and viewpoints, i.e. that not everyone is Christian.

Obvious troll is obvious...

There's nothing wrong with people getting together in groups to share similar ideas/beliefs. As a Christian, it can be hard to see people uniting in a false worldview but you just have to befriend those people and get to know them and be Jesus to them in the way you live your life.

Well Christians do the same thing....Put enthusiasm into religion and convince others to do the same :p

Everybody has different view points and different life and world views. Why don't you join their group? Try to see them as people who have had their own individual life experiences and have reasons for what they believe (or don't believe) rather than people who are choosing to remain blissfully ignorant. Chances are, they know more about Christianity than you expect :)

I actually hope atheists become even more militant, and start actually representing ourselves in the government. It's time we take the country back from the religious right that are preventing scientific advancement, basic civil rights, and a higher level of tolerance.

While I understand where you're coming from, the bad that would come from that would outweigh the good...

I'd like to think that I don't know what the outcome would be. Making broad generalizations about a nebulously defined social movement seems......inaccurate at best. That aside. I think people have a right to assembly and if a student ground is allowed to form people should be free to form it.

I can see very few negative drawbacks from it. People like Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly would disappear into the fray where they belong, and we'd have sensible people directing our country to a better, reasonable future. Instead of having the debate about whether or not to use stem cell research, we'd be able to make real progress into curing genetic maladies. Rather than debating whether or not people should be able to serve openly in the military, we'd be discussing how to best protect ourselves from religious extremists.

While it's hard to predict any specific events, it's not hard to imagine what a more secularized world would look like.

Oh no doubt in some ways. My admonition of what he said has more to do with trying to shove a simplistic statement into inherently complex subjects like social movements and less about the specific nature of the complex subject at hand.

You would also lose basis for morality in general and that is a slippery, slippery slope.

You need religion to survive college? Seriously? That's kind of sad.
