  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sure i will explain The bible says in Phillipians 4:8 (i believe) to think on things that are pure and holy. just and true. I just wandered how christiana a. and brittany s. sing songs that are pure and holy. Nine inch nails? Are they singing pure and holy music? if the word of God says to think on good stuff and all you put in is garbage don't you think that eventually you'll wander away from God? THere is plenty of christian music out there that sounds just like the secular stuff only with christian lyrics that glorify God..........
When I listen to music I listen to it first and formost for the music and not the lyrics. I'm glad God made me this way, I usually dont know what songs are about until I have heard them a number of times. If the lyrics are bad, then I usually stop listening to the song. I look for beauty in music that is a reflection of the beauty of God's creation. You are right, we need to follow Pauls advice in Phillippians.

I agree with Alexeexah about this. Secular music is probably not the best thing to fill your mind with but face it..I listen to it. i know that it's not good...well I guess that some is worse than others..I have heard the arguments that since they dont swear and talk about badging one another it must be ok, but I also have heard it said that music is a tool to worship God. Lemme rebute the unaffirming to secular statement but posing this: If music was developed in order to woship teh Lord, then how can Christian Rock bands liek Reliant K who sing of girls needing mood rings, or FM static sign about their first stereos be good?

Personally I view it this way: If the music you listen to causes you to sin or think immoral thoughts, then turn it off. The bible tells us that if your hand causes you to sin then cut it off, being a metaphor for ending connections to strongholds in our lives.

Then again, if teh music you listen to doesnt really talk abotu sex and death and drugs and you are ok with it then do it. I am not here to judge. I guess that if you each have questions, dont go to eachother, go to teh source...talk to God...

Then what about bands like the Cruxshadows, whos lyrics deal with themes such as classical literature, self sacrofice for the people you love and the society you belong to and historical events? Or Alice 2 whos lyrics deal with becoming a better person and overcoming hardships? Both secular bands to the best of my knowledge. Or Libitina who cover a wide range of subjects, amongst which are the ideas of self improvement and taking the blame when you hurt some one (such as their recent release Mea Culpa)?

I don't think it is as cut and dried as you think it is.

Oh jeez. This subject worries me. Music needs to be enjoyed. It's one of lifes great pleasures, and just because an artist doesn't openly sing about god or whatever doesn't mean they have to sing about gambling, prostitution and murder. I haven't really heard much christian music and I'm sure some of it is good, but good lyrics make me happy, and singing about God all the time must be restricting.
Let me put it this way, you probably would'nt be so concerned if an atheist wrote a piece of classical music.
Please, just for my sake, open up and listen to any old music. Stop being a stereotype and get out there.

"Secular" music is quite life-giving to my spirit, personally. Next question?

i totally agree. i am a new christian and secular music literally saved my life. a certain band in particular. i wont go into particulars, IM me for the story, but i literally would not be here today if not for a certain secular band.

i love country music and it raises my spirit. secular musicll kill your spirit when u start to even think it does. i
im sorry but i dont think secular music does so, and in the cases where people blame marilyn manson or eminem for depressed people and whatnot...thats wack. blame the "secular society" for instilling a load a junk into peoples mind and bad parenting. people are just tryin to blame something else for their own problems.

not tryin to bash or anything but i think the concept is kind of silly.

Well then don't listen to it! Simple as that.

Because music can also be used to express emotions, feelings, tell stories, educate etc, which is what secular artists are doing. And what kind of a word is 'rebute'?

Hey you're getting the hang of it now. If listening to secular music doesn't cause me to fall into sin, then I can go on listening to it you say? so you don't agree with Alexeeah then.

*sigh* Why do so many Christians try and pass off what they personally believe to be immoral as some absolute truth? If you don't like secular music then by all means, don't listen to it. But don't assume that just because you struggle with keeping your life on the straight and narrow if you listen to it that everyone else will have the same problem.

You're in a christian forum and you seriously asking that question. Come on now.

It depends on what type of secular music you are talking about. There are some songs and some genre's I stay away from b/c of the language and the lyrical content...but I mostly listen to pop and christian music so they are not bad. Most of them anyways.

Whatever you do, don't get hot under the collar about folk not agreeing with you.

Andy

You are making this bigger than it actually is, he/she just stated his/her opinion and asked for yours he/she by no means said you had to agree with their opinion. Just b/c you don't agree, doesn't mean you had to interpret it as if he would get "hot under the collar" if no one agreed with him/her

I wasn't presuming she would get hot under the collar, I made the comment because in the past there have been folk who have gone on a crusade trying to get christian to stop listening to secular music and at times in turned extremely ugly. A lot of the people who have been here for a while were glad to see the back of that little 'controversy'. Note nadro's response in the 1st reply to the OP.

peace,
Andy

I'll keep talking, hopefully I can force you to puke.
Not all songs have a "message" nor should they. And I "should" listen to music however I want. I'm a musician and the notes catch my ears, not the words. With your criteria for listening to music, it seems you would be sickened by all who listen to classical music or other forms of purely instrumental music. Or anyone who listens to a song in a language they are not fluent in. I guess that Bach sickens you for writing without lyrics?

im a musician tooo, and i listen for notes too, cause you have to like the music to appreciate the lyrics, but im just saying, that the lyrics are so important, if you discard the lyrics, well the lyrics are the point the musician is trying to get across. im all for instrumentals too, cause those are ways of musicians to get something inside them across with their emotion. its just i cant understand how you could listen to music just for the music, cause lyrics are really important to me, as a writer and a guitar player.

Musicians can express their feelings through lyrics or sound. Certain sounds evoke different feelings, happiness, sadness, etc etc. And the words don't always have meaning. My favorite band sometimes uses words because the phonetics go well with the note being played. So if there are lyrics in a song they are not necessarily the conveyors of the meaning or point of the song. I enjoy music like that more than lyrics. Thats my personal taste. Thats why I'm lead guitar, and melodies are my favorite part of a song, and I dont sing and havent written lyrics to any of my songs. I enjoy the music much more. You are the opposite, so what?

anything that mentions God (in a good way...) or anything that has nothing to do with worldly stuff... i think...

anway i basicly ONLY listen to "secular" music as you guys call it... and i very rarely listen to "christian". for me, if the beat is good, has (reletavly) good lyrics, and the singer doesnt say the "f" word 53 times in one song, its ok music.

So what are your opinions? I believe that listening to the secular charts can be deadly for your spirit..........What do you think?
"Rock Groups Hardly Satanistic
Editor's note: The following column was submitted by a member of the rock group Rush in response to Jim Hankins' July 19 coverage in The Daily Texan of a seminar entitled "No One Here Gets Out Alive." The seminar was sponsored by the Longhorn Christian Fellowship and centred on the theme that many popular rock music songs are trying to turn American youth against Christianity toward Satanism or other religions. The group contended that either blatantly or through subliminal means, musicians convey satanic messages in their songs.
I am writing in response to an article which was written by your reporter Jim Hankins in your issue of July 19, "Group seeks to show rock 'n roll Satanic." It was a while ago, but the article was sent to me through several intermediary steps. Besides, it's never too late to discuss a matter like this, and as I happen to be a member of one of the groups mentioned, perhaps I can interject a little rationality and truth into such a hysterical exercise in propaganda.
Satanism. Now here is a word that should be kept away from some people the way you should keep matches from children and guns from jealous husbands!"
