Since this is a place to discuss different religions, I would like to know how people here would score religions that they know on a scale of -10 to +10? A negative score means that you would prefer being isolated to joining that religious community, and a positive score means that you would prefer joining that religious community to being isolated. Here are my scores from lowest to highest:

Reform Judaism -10
Modern Protestantism -8
Atheism -7
Islam -5
Catholicism -2
Orthodox Judaism +1
Odinism (pagan) +2
Orthodox Christianity +3
Karaite Judaism +5

Please post how you would score the religions that you know.

I like Belief-O-Matic more:

Belief-O-Matic - Beliefnet.com

I come out 100% Baha'i and 99% Sikh and Reform Judaism. After that Quaker. I was a bit surprised that the liberal Protestantism in which I was raised came in a poor fifth.

Considering that I am already isolated and don't mind, I'll give -10 to all religions. Atheism isn't a religion, so that doesn't count.

There are groups that are connected in some way with an godless worldview. I'd count the Fellowship of Reason as +10, and other groups I'd have to judge carefully for worldview, attitudes, focus, activities, etc.

I came out as a Unitarian Universalist, I must admit I had to look up their beliefs. I'm a mixed bag of lollies I think!!

On Belief-O-Matic, I came out 100% Orthodox Judaism and 99% Unitarian Universalist. How is that possible when these religions have almost nothing in common? This shows the absurdity of this test.

WoodrowX2, I understand your ratings from an Islamic perspective, but I am curious why you rated Orthodox Christianity lower than Catholicism.

I don't know what to call this, but the most appealing religion is the one that Jane the Bane describes in this quote:

I like to think of the trees and rocks and animals as energized and working in their specialties towards some universal goal.

I also like what I've read about Taoism and Agnosticism.

Atheism is good, but I lose the sense of wonder about the world.

ALSO, it seems like not knowing is essential to our existence. Understanding and abstracting can help us notice patterns and details in the confusion, but ultimately we should step back and look at the big picture as a piece of art again.

This was quite an interesting read after my little belief quiz.

I like Belief-O-Matic more:

FYI- they must have changed the way they do the Belief-O-Matic quiz- because it was only showing the number one score when I just took it. At least my new and old Belief-O-Matic still puts Orthodox Christian as my top choice. Even still, I dislike the quiz because I never seem to find the exact answer I'd like to put.

Anyway- here's how I'd rate things:
Eastern Orthodox +10
Roman Catholic +9
Oriental Orthodox +9
Mainline Christian/Protestant +5
Evangelical Christian +1
Orthodox Judaism +1
Bahai 0
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints 0
Hinduism 0
Odinism (pagan) 0
Quaker 0
Reform Judaism 0
Seventh Day Adventist 0
Unitarian Universalist 0
Islam -1

Atheism (Atheism isn't a religion- so one is not part of a religious group here)
Karaite Judaism (I don't even know what this is)

To me- zero means you wouldn't consider joining the religion anyway. To go lower would just show how much you don't like the religion in question.

My results are influenced by my beliefs, the belief-o-matic quiz, my experiences with various religious communities and the definition of numbers that seashale is using:

My ratings:
Deism [+10]
Syncretic Neo-paganism* [+9]
Ethnic Neo-paganism* [+8]
Pantheism [+7]
Taoism [+6]
Gnosticism [+5]
Mainline/Liberal Protestantism [+4]
Orthodox Christianity [+4]
Shinto [+3]
Buddhism [+1]
Roman Catholicism [0]
Judaism [0]
Hinduism [0]
Latter-Day Saints [0]
Baha'i [0]
Unitarian Universalism [0]
Islam [-3]
Evangelical Protestantism [-5]
Scientology [-7]

Looking at this list; it seems as if I am more on the non-intervention type of religion, I have a strong preference for animism (a pretty broad category) and I have some affinity for Christianity but I've been burned by a lot of cultural aspects of it.

*I could subdivide these categories forever but I will save your sanity.

I like trying to understand other perspectives, so I am curious why an Eastern Orthodox Christian would rate Mormonism so much lower than other forms of Christianity.

Atheism (Atheism isn't a religion- so one is not part of a religious group here)
If you spent some time with Atheists, you might change your mind on this. I should know because I was Atheist.

Karaite Judaism (I don't even know what this is)
Karaite Judaism follows the Old Testment but not the Talmud. From a Christian perspective, most of today's Jews are Pharisees but the Karaite Jews aren't.

I think Islam has more in common with Christianity than the LDS faith. I think Mark Twain nailed it with his view of the Book of Mormon.

An excerpt:

If you'd like to see for yourself exactly how much deviation there is from Christianity, I'd suggest you watch one of their ceremonies. I personally recognize nothing from my own faith here:

Islaam = +10. Really, it's Islaam or nothing. Not only would I want to be isolated rather than convert to anything else, I'd hope that Allaah would take my soul while I am a Muslim rather than dying in a state of disbelief.

I truly cannot convey how emaan (faith) in Islaam feels to me in suitable words. Ibn Taymiyyah said something about how if the strongest of the world knew what happiness the believers have, they would rush to take it from us for themselves with the tips of their swords. I think that's the closest I can come to describing how I feel.

As for giving a rating to other religions, I typed something up but I see this thread as somewhat of a "display your dislike for certain religions" thread and I don't want to partake in that portion. I think it's clear that my love, my life is Islaam and I'm not particularly attached to any other religion.

Edit/bold mine.

I can see this perspective especially for most people who are devout to their religion unwaveringly but I think that as both I have seen in real life conversation and on a slew of forums, many people are less sure or dedicated to their core religious doctrine and that's OK. Though I don't trust the OP based on his posting history and my personal experience, I do not see anything immediately wrong with such rankings, usually such biases have already came out in posts anyways, I think it just a more concrete way of showing where people stand.

Just my opinion.

Many of Mormons I have met (a lot of them, as I am from the region of the Nauvoo temple) don't like to be directly associated with mainstream Christianity because they see themselves as restorationists that fall outside of the evolution of Christianity as we know it.

Plus many Christians do not hold them in high regard because of many differences in doctrine.

Personally, I love my Mormon friends! What a kind bunch of people.

My immediate reaction to the OP was, "Does one shop for religion the same way one picks out socks at Walmart?"

One embraces a religion because they believe it is true, not because it meets their personal preferences.

I posted the bit about Belief-O-Matic because I find it fun, not because I think it is any way to pick a religion. What it really uncovers is what you already believe.

Well, you are certainly right. If you are going to pick a religion based on a quiz or some sort of ranking; you're oversimplifying and incredibly complicated and deep process. Plus you probably won't stick with it.

I do like taking those quizzes simply because I have a hard time codifying my beliefs to an actual religion, so I like to see how closely I fit. This time I got Unitarian Universalism which I do not believe I am so I threw it out.

This.

While I have enjoyed religion and can understand how it benefits some people, I'd rather not dip my hand into religion ever again.
